Unhappy

I have a MY94 WRX RA with EJ20 engine

The engine is in bits as I have a BigEnd faliure
When the heads were taken off I noticed one of the cylinders was very oily, so I took out the piston and the Big Ends are completly had it.

The piston has been slapping around and damaged the bore. I will need to get it rebored anyway but how much and where can I get hold of a 2.2 litre Stroker kit.

What are the Pros and Cons of it??

While I am at it is there anything else you can suggest I do while the engine is in bits??

Any Thoughts

Thanks in advance
Scott

hi
i have a 2.2 stroker in my sti type R
The pros are
1/ much stronger- eg better rods( billet steel), bolts forged pistons crank( 2.5 shaved) etc
2/ higher horsepower applications
3/ better torque and response

Make sure you do the other bits as well eg bigger fuel pump, injectors, rails, turbo etc
There isnt a lot of cons except use some one whose is experienced
the other con of course is price - not cheap
There are a few makers of the stroker kits
1/ Jun auto( which i have
2/Bpm and a few other aussie makers
Ps If u have the dosh it is way worth it
my mods are
1/ Trust Frontmount ( plate and Bar)
2/Large injectors- 800 cc ( we think)
3/T-61 turbo ( twisted)
4/The largest cams we have ever seen
5/Uprated feul pump
6/50 mm HKS s/s racing wastegate
7/ Cold airbox
8/Cusco Twin plate and flywheel
9/Seriously upgraded gearbox
10/Stroker Kit- rods,pistons,crank etc
11/ compression is 220 acoss the board
12/diamond coil packs- very large
13/evc valve controller
14/hks f-con v pro ecu
15 launch controller
16/knock sensors
17 HKS stainless extractors (very very sexy)
18/ seriously played with heads
19/throttle body enlarged
20/balanced and lightened pulleys

Another con is that a big end could go just as easy, and then it really would COST !!!!!!!!!!!!
I did hear of someone using a legacy 2.2 short motor and fitting forged pistons. Of course, why not go to the 2.5 and fit forged pistons and the quad cam heads. I was in contact with a guy from Oz who has done a few a couple of years ago. The stroker kit seems like a lot of money for only a 10 % gain in cc. Better spending the money elsewhere. Ecu? Intercooler? Turbo?

I dont disagree about it only being a 10% increase
but the intention of a stroker is not just about capacity.
its about making your engine stronger
the weakest parts of the ej20 engine are the connection bolts, rods ( usually same about most engines actually)
Stronger engine does allow a more agressive approach
I also agree that it should be one of your last mods eg do turbo etc first
I would have thought that with your strong exchange buying from overseas would be a bargain??
Ps buy direct fron oz not through a middleman as they will charge like a wounded bull
Regards

You obviously don't need a stroker kit to replace the rods, and pistons with stronger parts, so the only benifit, will be the increased capacity.

Most of the stroker kits are based around the EJ25 crank, which has a 79mm stroke, as against the 75mm sroke of the EJ20.

This in itself, DOESN'T give 2.2lts, but 2.122lts, IF you go to the max + 50 oversize pistons.

So, what some companies do, is to "offset grind" the bigend journals, to increase the stroke. The downside of this, is that the journal dia' is reduced, and so is crank strength. Apart from the fact that the Phase 1 EJ25 bigend journals are already smaller, at 48mm (EJ20/EJ25 Phase 2 are 52mm).

There are various options, but done correctly, they're not cheap.

By the way Claret, is it up and running yet

Mark.

Hi Mark
well it has been transplanted
the only hick up is the electrics- because the setup is quite radical with the wiring ( understatement) lol lol
there is a problem with the aftermarket hks pro v and the loom
wehave spark, feul, injector pulse ( which should be enough) but for some reason it wont turn over as of yet???????
we know it should work as it was going in the gtb sigh!!!!!
they think they now know the prob though and by friday fixed.
I hope this is the case cause the electrical bill is goin be huge gulp!!!!!
Adam I will post some picks of the front mount and the transplant
I had a lovely version 5 front with sparco lip which had to be butchered to fit.
We in NZ seem to get a lot of wrx imports with frontmounts but mine is by far the largest I have yet seen
regards all
