what oil ???
#1
Hey guys, soon due for my 1000 mile service.
I think I am going to put semi-synthetic in my engine till it finshes fully breaking in (about 10 k - 20 k miles). Some say put in full after 7500 but I think I will wait a little longer as most agree that SCoobs take 20k miles to fully break in.
Now I can get a hold of the following SAE semi-synthetics:
10-30
20-50
Which should I use bearing in mind that I live in a year round hot climate where the temp is usually above 75 F and below 95 F (usually mid 80's during the day), so never really very cold outside.
Is it the lower the better SAE for cold starting etc and the high SAE for when hot?? ie: If you use a 15 - 50 , the 15 is for when starting the car and warming up and the 50 is for when it is cold ?
I have a MY2001 STI JPN spec.
Thanks a ton,
Ray

There was a large thread on oil a while ago - I think related to engine failure. From memory the 1st number is the viscosity when cold and the second is when hot - the higher the second the better it protects the engine in heat (but I stand to be corrected!).
The recomended oils are either Castrols RS 10:60, Motul 15:50 or maybe Mobil 1 Motorsport 15:50??. Be careful tho cos both Castrol and Mobil do the same oils in different grades (0:40 I think) which aren't suitable for the Scoob.

Ray,
Richard has summed it up very well. They are the oils to go for. The top techies on this bbs have recommended the oils that Richard mentioned.
Cheers,
Wrexy.

Hi Wrexy and others,
I still have the following problem.
I can only get 20 - 50 or 10 - 30 SAE semi synth. So I guess I should go for the 20 - 50.
Now, I am still curious as for how long to use the semi synthetic for. Some say until 7,500 mile change, some say use semi for 20k miles. Some even say use FULL sythetic on the 1000 mile change.
Also, I understand that for cold starting you may need a low 15, 20 SAE etc, but my question is even in a hot climate as mine would I need this or can I go for a staright 40 SAE. Also, becuase I have a hot climate should I use something higher than 50 SAE due to the hot weather ie: 25,30 - 60 SAE.
Most imprtantly I would like to have the semi vs. full synthetic situation sorted.
Thanks again guys,
Ray

Well I thought you were supposed to stick with mineral oil until you are around the 8000 mile mark and then you can switch to fully synth. It's something to do with the bores being extremely hard and not wearing in properly with synth.....

Ray,
Go for the semi synthetic at the service. Use the semi synthetic till 7500 miles or 12,000km. Then go to the fully synthetic. As for grade since you can't get the 10W/60 or 15W/50 I'm not sure. Someone with a more tech background my like to add here.

You guys obviously know your onions (you could write my knowledge of oils on the back of an acid tab with a magic marker), but my local dealer told me to use Castrol Magnatec 10/40. Is this a good recommendation ?

This is getting crazy......
some use regular oil, some semi, some full synthetic......
some use 10-40, some 15-50, some 10 - 60, some 10-30, etc etc
I mean there are so many people using completely different oils I think I will stop worrying and just stick any old thing in my cars engine.....
Wish me luck
