Hi Stu
On the pre 97 cars, this needs to be blocked off. A local nut and bolt factor can supply a bolt to fit the hole. Alternatively, there is a Ford spark plug which is the same bore, about £3 from Halfords.
The sensor in your existing DP is an exhaust gas temp sensor which works as a hot cat sensor, lighting the "cat on fire" light on the dash, if the cat fails. This can be unplugged from the loom (white round plug near the air filter) and stored with your old DP.

Yep, i bought my downpipe from s/s last week and went round the corner to hayward and scott and they welded it up for me (top hole) just unplug the bottom sensor and disgard it with the **** downpipe
For amusement purposes blow a rasberry down the original downpipe once its off and then down the scoobsport one, it will keep you smiling whilst you fit the new one .......
