Default Gearbox question

I have a Impreza 2000 and I have a small problem with the gearbox, it's getting harder to select 2nd gear when going up the box, but isn't to bad when coming down from 3rd to 2nd. Any ideas on what could be causing this problem?

If they are anything like a evo box.....you will be putting another box in soon
The 6 speed box normally starts to get tight going first to 2nd , then it gets a bit crunchy (like you havnt got the clutch down right)......3rd to 2nd is fine.
Before the box fails 5th to 6th gets tight

Oh really, I was hoping to get away with not replacing the whole box. Mine is only a 5 speed box btw.

Does anyone know how much a reconditioned box would cost for a 98 turbo 2000, roughly.

Car is totally standard mate, so I'm guessing roughly 220ish bhp, only has a ninja 2 exhaust on it at the moment and no plans to upgrade the power in the future.

Thanks mate, I will get it looked at after Christmas. Someone has suggested that it could just be a case of replacing the 2nd gear synchro, but will get it checked ASAP.

Just been out in the car and I've noticed that it's easier to select 2nd gear when the car is cold and it gets stiffer when hot. Any thoughts as to why guys?

I recon Synchro mate

Had the same issue on my box except it was worse than yours, I believe when it's cold the oil is thick which hides the issue but as it gets hotter it thins out and the issue becomes more evident, I got a second hand low mileage box off here for £175 and it was perfect, worth keeping an eye out mate

Good luck

A gear oil change may help to Shockproof or similar.

Thanks mate, it will keep an eye on the for sale section to see if anything comes up

Yes I think I will try this before shelling out for a new gearbox, i take it that shockproof is a thicker oil then and doesn't thin as much when it gets hot?

Redline do a lightweight & heavyweight shockproof & both are known to help problem boxes, they have the characteristics of heavier oils than they are. I think I'd try the lightweight first but it's possible the heavyweight may work for your problem.

Ok thanks mate. Would the heavyweight 1 cause the gearbox to seem stiff when the car is cold, but work better when warmed up?

I think it would. Try the lightweight first.

Just a little update on this thread. Today I change the gearbox oil for redline lightweight and it's made the gearbox feel worse, not better
