Classic 2.5 which 6 speed
Following on from another thread I started in the wrong section.
I'm currently building a 2.5 classic v2 sti ra that will hopefully run anywhere between 400 and 450bhp, predominantly a fast road car with a few track days and plenty of ring trips thrown in.
I have decided a 6 speed Is what I want rather than a ppg. Yet I'm unsure weather I want Jdm or Uk.
Please could you post your experiences with the 2.5 engine and your 6 speed be it jdm or uk. Newage and ideally classic cars
I'm unsure weather the jdm box will be too short to take advantage of the 2.5 or weather the uk box will feel too long compared to my current Ra box
Ideally this will give me an idea which will be best for me.

PPG boxes are over rated. The big power guys stopped using them because they break. It's a pricey gamble to take considering how expensive they are.
A 6 speed will cope with pretty much anything you can throw at it.
I've had numerous high power classics. The last of which was 601bhp with a uk six speed. It was great. The huge gap between 4th and 5 th used to **** me off but you'd drive round it.
I now have a JDM blob Sti with a JDM 6 speed and that's fantastic. The only thing I would probably swap it for is a UK hawk six speed which has longer ratios in all gears.

Hi daz , didn't the hawk just have a taller 5th and 6th ? I thought 1-4 was the same ?

With a 2.5 you definitely want the longer ratio hawk/ forester ratios to take advantage of the torque and to play to the 2.5's strengths.
I have a jdm 6 speed in my 2.1 500bhp p1 and while it's perfect for a track, on the road you are changing gears all the time and that's with a revvy 2.1.

I had a jdm box for a while on a 2.5. Then went to a uk box and the taller gears made motorway cruising alot more comfortable.
My opinion, as said before, a tuned torquey 2.5 .... the longer the gears the better!

Have 440/440 on a nice spooly blower, so never noticed an issue!
With the power your aiming at, assuming your picking the right turbo, fairly sure youll be wanting the longest you can afford.
Currently on a uk dccd and massively happy with it.
But the old jdm non dccd only found red line in 6th once and that was at spa, so if its track only youll be talking about a different compromise than road with occasional track.

So I spoke with Andy over at Richard Henry's yesterday regarding my gearbox options. I mentioned that I had considered a jdm box and that I was as much as I liked the idea of it, it could be too low for the 2.5 motor. Andy suggested that we go with the jdm box and see how we get on with it, based on the fact that I like my current short box in my v2 sti RA and I think the jdm 6speed will still be in keeping with the nature of the RA. We'll see how we get on anyway.
My next problem is finding a set up, then I need to find a way of running the 5speed gear **** and gaiter as I dont like the look of the newage selector in a classic. Could be a problem due to the lift up reverse.

See how you feel with it - you can always swap the ratios later. I guess the 2.5 will still have a wide powerband as it'll be spooling earlier.
I can just about change gear quick enough, but first, second, third is pretty much as quick as you can say that and i do sometimes think that, for a mainly fast road car, it would be nice to have a slightly longer run between gear changes.
Meant to add that with the jdm ratios 7500 in 6th was GPS-ed at 164mph during 30-130 at Raf Marham a few years back as a guide to what the ratios top out at - pretty similar to the oem 5 speed but with another gearchange thrown in. 164mph is fast enough for pretty much all tracks, although the Ring offers a few places where you'd get towards that. Mind you my roof trim blew off at that speed anyway...
I think you could be struggling with retaining the 5 speed selector for the reasons you mentioned. You could always screw the 5 speed **** onto the 6 speed selector?
I have the 6 speed selector/ ****, gaiter in mine, but i glued the 6 speed leather gaiter into the underneath of 5 speed gear stick surround set up as the bit i really hated was the chrome gaiter surround in some of the new ages.
