Default Lower Mesh Grillin Black.

I know this topic has been discussed many times, but reading through all of the posts i am still a little confused.

I have a Black coloured MY05 Impreza, so therefore i would like the lower grill to be black also.

From what i understand, Scott Lowe are the only people who do a black of a good quality, but it comes as a kit with the top and bottom grills. I only need the lower and the top would just go to waste.

Subaru supply one, but from the picture it is unclear what colour it actually is - http://www.subaru.co.uk/IMGGB/WWW/Su...A?Opendocument Is it chrome or black. In any event, does anyone have a picture of the Subaru Grill fitted.

Or indeed if you have any other suggestions (apart from making my own) of a black grill for this year of Impreza i'd appriciate it. My Rad is getting a bit of a beating.

Many thanks,

Steve

Hi Mate

The Subaru one is Chrome. On my MY01 I painted this with black Hammerite which worked well but it did need respraying every couple of months as the paint did chip off the chrome

on my MY03 I bought a Scott Lowe one and sold the upper grill on Ebay for £20

Yeah the picture of the Subaru is what kind of threw me on colour!

Looks like it'll be a phone call to Scott Lowe tomorrow then!

I have seen a few pictures of this fitted and it does look nice on Black Imprezas.

Cheers,

Steve

I thought about spraying mine black but wondered about how long it would stay that way.

Phil has answered that one for me.

I didn't like the idea of the stainless showing through the paint after a few gravel stages or negotiating the road down to the southbank @ Brands.

So I left it as stainless which goes with the SS sill plates & SS rear bumper cover, which with the "Shadow Chrome" wheels gives a black & silver theme to the car.

Now having seen yours again Flat Eric, i like that one too !! AArrrggggg !!!!

What make is your lower grill and where did the chrome upper grill mesh come from to match. Was it part of the same kit?

May have to make an informed choice......now where is that coin !!

Cheers guys,

Steve

Betts made Flat Eric's grille mate, he's had a load of orders to make them but hasn't done so

Looks like I'll have to nick the jig and make them myself, ps I made a jig for classics too

Yep the lower grill was hand crafted by Betts & he just replaced the OE mesh in the top grill with the same mesh that he used for the lower one.

I had to fit a new top grill & I changed the mesh over myself. You can get a sheet of it from Halfords & cut it to shape with decent sharp wire cutter pliers then use the clips that are already there to fit it to the top grill.

Just to tempt you further

I have had several over on Scoobycity asking about my grill & wanting one made.

I could act as your agent for a small commission if you like.

Personally i prefer Phils black mesh than the chrome/stainless stuff.

Could always get it black powder/plastic coated

Or just lose it and get a front mount and a twisted Garrett

Problem solved

Mmm fit a front mount.

But then I would loose my horn.

Is twisted Garrett related to these ?

It's an EJ series engine being rebuilt. the turbo is "twisted" to 45degs to allow shorter pipe runs and a smoother air flow, more air you can get through a turbo, the more power you can achieve

All of that +

You'll have bigtime trouble mounting any turbo larger than a GT30R in the stock location, most larger turbos will run an external wastegate, so this will also require extra room.

The intake pipe required to flow a larger turbo will not fit under the intake manifold.

I know youre going to say that APS to a stock mounting APS 40 series but this isnt really a proper GT35R, its a GT35 cartridge in different housings.

Above all that ....... twisted is better

I didn't want to get too technical mate

Twisted is good, but a front mounted turbo is even better, ie Andy Forrest's Impreza

Thats only cos the primarys are shorter mate, thats why the EVOs engine is so much better??

Cos the turbo aint a mile away from the exhaust ports like they are on the pony scooby design

A FM turbo is alot more messing about for road cars so the twisted design is easier to execute.

Tissy:- I have the grill pictured in your link. It is black mesh, and fitting is top notch, worth the money and the looks, have a look see what you think:-
