Default Another mod......

As I have just done ANOTHER little “cosmetic” mod to my STI, thought you might like to see the end results.

As “almost everyone” seems to have the usual gold wheels with their WR Blue STI’s, I was planning to have a different set on in time, but these popped up and as they fitted in with my overall plan for my car, (especially when I learnt what they were and how rare they were) - I wasn’t going to let these go.

With Zak doing his offer on the Vredstein’s – well it would be rude not to take advantage of it all and so this little “cosmetic” mod got done way in advance of my original plan, but hey ho…………

These wheels are a bit different – they are from Subaru Japan, and were produced to go on a “Special Edition STI” for sale in Japan only to commemorate TOSHI ARAI joining the Subaru World Rally Team (specifically for Rally Japan, although I don’t think he came anywhere – even though doing my research on this, I found he has a very, very long list of rally wins over the years in the Japanese domestic rally world). Not sure how many of these JDM STI’s were produced, but I can only guess that they were a pretty limited production……..

These are the larger offset, so will only fit the 2005 STI’s onwards, so 1) There won’t be many of these in the UK anywhere (if there are any others at all) and 2) They won’t fit many of the STI’s on the road anyway, thus making them nice and pretty exclusive to my car………… which of course is very nice to know!

Yes I know that keeping white wheels white is an absolute bug**r to do, but I’m going to have to get a “Detailing Specialist” to do a bit of work on them to protect them a bit to at least give a some chance………. LOL at me……… With my attitude to cleaning my cars, and here I am talking about someone we all know actually working on it (assuming he wants to of course)! Humble pie anyone…….??

Probably too late to get any of these into the Calendar shots as I need to clean the car first, and get out on another photo shoot, and there won’t be enough time for that….

BTW – Overall impressions on the Vredstein’s (from the 10 miles I’ve done on them) so far, is that they are as nice as everyone says and the steering seems to be a bit “lighter” when going round corners, turn in seems no different to the RE070’s, but I didn’t get the “jiggly” feeling I did with the RE070’s – might be early days, but so far so good!

Oh – I know that Frayz won’t like the blue wheel nuts……… I bought them off Ebay in an enthusiastic moment a few months ago, and I will wait to see if I like them or not, so may change them back to the usual silver ones in time………

One thing is guaranteed though – When you see a blobeye blue STI with white wheels at a meet – it most probably will be me!!

Close up.

Side shot taken near a field on the way out from Zak’s.

Two mods – Detango and Wheels!
OK – now I’m bracing myself for the comments – hopefully you won’t be too harsh……

Never seen a colour coded locking wheel nut - must exist I suppose somewhere, but if not - what a good idea for the manufacturers to consider!

I suppose one idea could be getting some paint to match and painting the top of the nut I suppose??

Wonder if halfrauds can match it - I've still got 4 nuts left unused... might pop down there tommorrow to see.

Hi looie , it was me @ Zaks Saturday morning picking up my tyres (I remember your number plate ). I must agree so far the tyres seem fine , with a lot less tramlining than from the old Bridgestones , I kind of forgot to say goodbye as I left , but you seemed busy sorting out your tyres .

Enjoy cleaning the new wheels

Default Wow .. I Like those lots !!

Looie ...

Simly stunning mate

Love them

Its great to be different

Please keep them clean as dirty white just does not look as good

Seal them up asap with some wheel wax sealant

Cleaning will need to be done with the wheels removed , Good luck it's a tedious job , But one that does bring results so well worth it imho , I Remove & clean my whels nearly every week if not deff every 2 weeks

I Find that after cleaning a quick spray round the inside of the wheel with a drop of WD40 Makes cleaning next time a little easier & stops the brake dust getting on/ in the alloy

Well done mate a great addition from one of our more conservative members

Wow - I was half expecting some "don't like 'em" comments, but glad to see that so far they are all positive !!

Got some matching blue enamel paint today from B&Q (Halfrauds didn't have anything), so when I get a moment, I'm going to try to paint the top of one of the locking wheel nuts to see if it looks OK, and if it works, then I will do the others.

Had a look in Halfrauds for some wheel "sealant" if that's what you call it, but TBH I didn't see anything apart from general spray cleaners, which I can get in Tesco's for half the price.... Maybe the "specialist" stuff was in another area, but I didn't see it. For the time being I will probably just use Tesco's stuff until I can get to a meet and have a chat to Matt, who I'm sure will have the right stuff to sell to me.....

I like the look as i like the "Arai edition" anyway.

However, it will only look good if you get them sealed and keep on top of them mate.
If you start slacking they will dull, yellow and look sh1te. Ive lived with a set of white rims for 18 months and they are alot of work, but worth the effort IMO.

The nuts look okay if you lose the locker and add the 5th blue nut to the rims. If you really want to keep the locker id go for silver or black lug nuts.

The car now also looks like it could use a drop to complete the look. Add an STI carbon lip to the front and i think youre on to a winner there mate.

Cheers Frayz - I was more woried about what you would say than anyone else..... LOL

Front Splitter is on the list of "to do" items, and I would have done it sooner rather than later, but the money I've spent on these wheels/tyres has changed the budget a bit. Will have to save a few pennies now to replace that money before I can move on further with my plans.

The wheels "were" going to be the last thing I changed, so I'm adjusting what will be next on the list accordingly, depending on the finances. Five more things on my list to do yet on the "cosmetic front"...........

I'm leaving Zak to look after the car mechanically (Servicing etc), until it's out of warranty next Sept, then if all goes to plan, there will be a few things upgraded mechanically, but not till then.

At the moment - 305BHP is more than enough for me!

love the look of that. get plenty of poorboys wheel sealant on there asap mate. 4 layers initially should do it. then an extra one every other week should see them stay white.

Looie

You want to take a look at my wheel and locking nuts.

They all look the same with the locking nut having a slightly smaller chuck key.

Yes please..........!! Was hoping you would post on these- Fancy a small commission to do it right first time ?, and then show me exactly what to do each other week? If so, PM me your no and we can have a chat about me popping over.

I know what I'm like and if I am left to do it my own way - I will miss something important and end up ruining them.....
