I got one for you Frayz?
Have you ever heard of an actuator breaking down?
Would an after market one be a good idea or is the stock one good enough?
I know you a Knowledgeable guy! Some would say a know it all but i wouldn't

I think my car has been chipped, but God knows what with (it could be a McCain's Over Chip for all I know !!!)
Will the rolling road, in Feb, show alot about whats happening "in" my car as it were?
Okay.. the basics.
You car has an ECU (Electronic Control Unit)
This is the engines brain. In this brain there will be loads of tables, spreadsheets if you will. There is a speasd sheet for each of the enines parameters. ie fuel, boost, throttle opening, cylinder pressure, load etc etc etc.
With me so far?
Okay...
Basically the ECU reads these spreadsheets thousands of times a second. These spreadsheets tell the ECU what fuel/ign/bost to add at what time and for how long.
So there we have Mr ECU reading speadsheets and telling the engine what to do in order to work at its best efficency and make sure everything runs smoothly. Mr ECU is kind of like the conductor of a nice big band.. making sure everyone plays the right note at the right time.
Still with me?
Cool.
So now we come along and we Know that as our cars engine are basically a huge air pump and the more air we get in, the more we get out, the more power she makes.
So
We decide to change bits of the orchestra (exhaust, air filter turbo etc) to make the engine more efficient.
HOWEVER!!
Mr ECU is still reading the old spreadsheets and is wondering why his orchestra doesnt sound quite right.
He needs a remap.
So along we come with or remapping software to rewrite his spreedsheets so his orchestra now works to its best effiency again.
All the new parts are working properly and his music is louder than before.. (We have given him more power)
Is there anything there you still dont get and i can explain it better.
This is about as much as i can break it down lol

1992-1996
1996/10 - 1998/08
1998/09 - 2000/08
I was under the impression that the 99 onwards Standard ECU could be remaped?
Graham Goode say's
All models from 1999 onwards are fitted with a different type of engine management system, which we are able to modify electronically, without adding additional components. We have special computer software produced by a company called Ecutek which gives us full access to the engine management system, and the ability to modify (re-map) many parameters simply by downloading new information into it via the on board diagnostics socket.

lol... there are 3 types of Apexi ECU for the impreza:

1996/10 - 1998/08
1998/09 - 2000/08

I think...... and I'll have no problem if I'm wrong....
Early days, map changes were mostly carried out using piggy back chips.... these could be mapped....
For various reasons these didn't last long and the replacement ECU was the way forward as the OEM ECU was getting too complex to "hack"
As I said, I'm just repleating everything I heard when I brought the various after market ECU's I've had......
A big difference is price.... Ecutek remap around £650 Apexi and remap is around £800-£1000
Both effectively change the way the car runs and matches any mods you have or even just adjustment for UK fuel? They can also customise the driving characteristics of the vehicle....
The Apexi comes with a Commander hand controller which is useful as a monitor and if you know what your doing you can even changes things (note IF!!!)
Hope this helps....

I have gone from the std ecu, to an apexi as the std would not cope with the current output. Later ecu are much better at dealign with bigger outputs, something to do with injector scaling if I remember correctly.
