Default Great start to 2009

Just found out I could be laid off from work soon! As the building trade has gone pear shaped, we're struggling and if we don't get the contract for the Olympic site, then it's bye bye job

Not sure weather to take a chance and stay on until there's news of the tender, or look for another job now

What don't look good was that the contract was supposed of been awarded early last November, but as of yet, there's still no news.

Does anyone know of a company who needs a mechaical engineer/ plant fitter?

Good Luck Paul.

I also work within the construction industry and have had my hours/wages cut by 30%. It was either that or two people in our plant had to go

I don't know what to suggest. I am a great believer in fate, and think everything happens for a reason.
I would hang in there, as it is a 'buyers market' for employers at the moment.
Would it help if you suggested to your boss that you could go out fitting while things are tight?

Andy

baz, you tried car valeting?
you always keep the scoob spotless and im sure there are plenty of people who need it done in this weather.

you can get 1000 business cards printed in colour for about £40.

then its a couple of days walking about a bit delivering them, then hopefully you'll get a few calls.

you can always target "dirty / expensive" cars as well!!!

just a thought...

Sorry to hear this guys.

Paul ~ I would hang in there as long as possible. By all means, get your CV up to date and maybe start looking around, but you never know, your company may still get the contract. The Olympics WILL happen so someone will have to be awarded the contract.

Even though the olympics wasn't wanted by alot of people as it was seen as a waste of money etc. but it may just be the life-line alot of companies need in these tough times.

Good luck everyone, if I hear of anything available I will let you know.

a REALY stupid idea for all out of work at the moment, but i know that loads of coach/bus companys that are DESPERATE for drivers!

All you need is a FULL UK licence, and your half way there.

Most BUS companys will put you through a test, and you also GET PAID for it too.

Money is around £9 - £12 per hour, or if you go freelance like me, then you can be on anything up to £20 per hour.

Come on guys, there light at the end of the tunnel.........

Paul, the railway is normally looking for engineers, for track maintainance, etc, shiftwork, and long hours, but some of my "P-Way" collegues earn approx £45k a year, not amazing money but you get good pension, travel etc, I could poss find out if there are any vacancies if this sounds like something you would want to have a look into.

Im an electrician on the railway and they do still seem to be spending quite good money at the moment. Might be worth trying Network Rail, May Gurney, Balfour Beatty etc.
