once again they aren't smart enough to catch burglars so they go after something that is easy to do.
So right then folks, since we can't enjoy our cars anymore may as well go out and commit some burglarys, whos up for it? you get a slap on the wrist and told yoru a very naughty boy and thats it, and that also assumes you actualy get caught.

Heard about this on the radio this morning.
Let's see if they start pulling bikes as well because most of them are way louder than any car.
Can't believe they think this is a good use of police time. Would much rather they were out looking for the real law breakers, but I guess that would require some real police work rather than sitting at the side of the road waiting for people to come to them.

what an absolute joke. These wasters can't be bothered to go out and catch real criminals and are obviously using this idea to up they're quoter of arrests! I'm really glad i have worked everyday of my life and always paid insurance, so I am able to enjoy owning and driving a nice performance car. As said before I wonder how they will tackle bikes?

We can still enjoy our cars without sounding like an exocet missile!!! There`s a classic by me, just had new manifold, exhaust etc., and it`s annoyingly loud. Next on his list is anti lag...oh joy.

Fair point and I agree, there are some annoyingly loud cars about but how strict are they going to be with this? Will it be anything above a standard exhaust volume and you will be "done" for it or will it just be the stupidly loud ones?

this is *****! what about the background noise! down the seafront they wont get a decent enough reading due to adventure Island and all the other attractions! Hummm seems like they are just gonna pull anyone and test them to make a quick buck
anyway this is the link to the artical on the fuzz's web site!

Surely a solicitor/lawyer could come up with all sorts of reasons why a roadside test would not be valid. It's hardly "test-bed" conditions with all the ambient noise pollution from passing traffic etc.
What distance does the microphone have to be from the exhaust? What angle from the exhaust? When was it last calibrated? What was the influence of passing traffic or other ambient noise in the area? What state does the engine have to be at? Idle? 1500rpm? 3000rpm? Who is reponsible for getting the rpm just right? Im sure any one of these "technicalities" (and probably many others) would be enough for a good lawyer to get the case thrown out.
Seems like a waste of time to me if they are doing it everywhere, but as Frayz says, I'm guessing they will be using it as an annoyance and time wasting tactic to street racers and hooligans rather than general "posers" by targeting groups of cars messing about and racing by making them all stop and hang around burning fuel while the cops mess about with a microphone.

they have been doing it around maldon for a few months now, mainly the boy racers in tesco carparks. they make them hold revs about 4000 then do test, so we were told.

CLICK The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986
A friend of mine had a noise test done in Suffolk last year, the process went thus -
He was told that unless his results were over 90dB, therefore giving him a small margin of grace over the limit, it wouldn't be taken any further.
1. Background noise level (usually somewhere in the 60db's)
2. Idle db test - his was about 86dB at idle
3. 2/3rds maximum rpm steady throttle db test, repeated 3 times to get an average - his was about 100.2db, but they were lenient and let him do it at only 50% max rpm, so 3500rpm on his WRX.
End result - A £30 fine, & told to change the exhaust.
Quote from him "Trust me, I had all my arguments and points to raise over this, and he (policeman) seemed to take them on board and even agree with me.............and still then wrote me a ticket. He was perfectly reasonable with me about it, as was I with him - after all, it's not the officers fault he's having to enforce a nonsense regulation."
From the science point of view noise tests should be carried out in an open area as buildings or any other object would effect the reading. Think "Tunnel Run" & you get the idea.
Also altitude, humidity, ambient air temperature and background noise all have to be considered as well as the physical characteristics of the surface under the vehicle. Tarmac would have a different absorption/reflection of sound waves than say concrete.
Would their readings stand up in court with all those scientific variables?
What if you refused to rev your engine to 50% or 75% of max revs for fear of blowing a highly strung engine by reving the nuts off it under no load?
Lots of grey areas & possible loopholes.
