Default Bought One!!

after a bit of looking around, I have finally found a winner. Picking her up on Sat. My only worry is the coolant!! When opening the header tank I could not see any coolant, took her for a test drive around 20mins and and she never overheated. My question is before I drive her home can i top up this tank with water until i get her in the garage or do they require a special coolant? Apologies for a stupid question just want to know peoples thoughts.

Great news on finding one buddy! Was there 'any' liquid in the header tank?

How far have you got to travel?

Just top up the header tank with water. Hopefully you wont have to put much in it. If you put loads in I'd be a bit worried. Once topped up take it for a gentle drive and get it warmed up and make sure the heater blows hot air so you know there isn't an airlock.

After that check the header tank, CAREFULLY!! The tank should still be full. If it isn't check for a water leak.

(*Bought* better?)
With regards to liquid in the tank, there was some liquid in the tank but I could only tell by putting my finger in. It's about a 70 mile trip (1hr 30min). I will top this up before I embark on the journey, just would like to know what people advise on the coolant front?
PS I'm very excited (It's like Christmas again)

Using 'brought' instead of 'bought' in a particular context, is not an uncommon mistake!

I use Comma Xstream G-30 in my Classic STi.

You need about 4 litres or so. Before you put the new coolant in give the system a good flush through with a hose.

Yes water will be fine for now but bare in mind that it's still winter and it may well freeze so If I were you I'd make it a priority to get it refilled with the proper proportions of coolant/water.

I think we're assuming you mean the plastic tank and not the header (feeder) tank on top of the engine?
Only top it up to the minimum line when completely cold. It should then be around the 'max' mark when at full working temp.

Thanks for the advise, will do. The water will only be to get it home and to the garage (extreme scoobies) to let them get their hands on it. Would love to post some pics but not sure how??

Ron, its a 2003 Blob eye Impreza wagon (SL trim) silver, no mods apart from a balieys dump valve. 99K with FSH. Apart from the coolant issue looks well looked after.

You'll have to create a account on a FREE web photo hosting site like

http://beta.photobucket.com/

Upload your pics to there

When viewing the pics in your library , you'll see a links box next to your photo saying

Email / im link
Direct link
HTML code
IMG code

Click the ( IMG code ) and it automatically copies the link txt.

Then paste that code into the post txt on here

Hope that helps

That looks nice hoff.

If I were you I'd consider ditching the Bailey dump valve and refitting the oe one. Unless you like the sound that is? You can have running problems going with a vent to air. Each to his own though.

oh really, I must admit I did like the sound, does encourage some unnecessary gear changes. But if it's going to cause probs then I'll go back to OEM

Dump valve's are a bit of a touchy subject on here but going oe is definitely something to consider.

Do a search, chat to your mechanic and make up your own mind.

Yep they can cause idling and other problems if the dump valve hasn't been mapped into the ECU.

Guessing yours has not been mapped
