WRX Bootlid Torsion Springs On STi Spoiler?
Hi Folks
I recently put a Scoobyworld STi replica spoiler on my Hawkeye WRX, and as everyone knows, the spoiler is too heavy for the standard torsion springs to be able to lift the bootlid. Even more annoying is because there is no tension on the lock, the lid rattles over bumps.
Now...with the spoiler kit came a couple of little U clamps. I'm wondering if these are meant for modifying/loading the torsion springs in some way? If they are for that purpose, does anyone know how and where exactly they attach?
I may be totally wrong but I can't think of any other reason why they are in the kit, and there are 2 of them, like there are two springs.

Can't think how it's possible to modify the torsion springs with U clamps.
Mine never rattled with teh STI spoiler on the WRX springs. Suspect you need to adjust your lock.

It's defo the bootlid rattling, it's got about 2mm of play on the lock. The spoiler ain't going nowhere with the amount of bolts that hold the thing on, and the spoiler itself is solidly built, not like some of the cheap eBay ones.
Good point about adjusting the lock, BPR, I'm gonna have a look and see if I can do that. I'm not really bothered that the boot lid doesn't spring up, it's the annoying rattle that I've got to sort!
I will get some pics of the clamps put up later, but to give you an idea, they are exactly like exhaust U clamps but vey small, about half an inch long.
Right I'm going outside to see if there is any way to adjust the lock.

Lol yeah I suppose they could be used for that if that was someone's thing...
Anyway I've just had a look at the latch and there is no way of adjusting it, but it seems that usually, the springs are pushing the bootlid upwards and creating tension on the latch so that the boot springs open when the lever is pulled....which is all obvious.....but cos the spring is so weak against the weight of the spoiler, it takes very little effort to push the bootlid down a mm or two which is causing the rattle over bumps.
The only way I'm gonna sort this is to get some STi springs.

Something isn't right there. There are adjustments that can be made to the closure of the bootlid. Do all the panels line up ok gaps wise? Mine has no movement in the latch even if no springs are fitted.
Shouldn't have to use the STI springs to hold the lid up. Thats not right. Besides, with my STI springs the bootlid still doesn't fly open when unlocked. It sits shut until I pull it upwards, but saves me slamming the boot with enough force to cut the planet in half. Is well balanced so don't suspect it will provide the uplift you are hoping for to stop the rattle.

The gaps look ok but strangely enough, a while back, I took my car through a mechanical car wash (yeah I know that's terrible, and I haven't done it since), and a couple of days later all the paint on the bootlid bubbled up. No other panel was affected at all.....so the bootlid must have had different paint on it. I'm wondering if it was removed for painting at some point, and not put back on quite right?

I have a rattle too, but I'm putting that down to the shocks, although torsion bars may be a cheaper solution lol.

I've just put some sti torsion springs in me spec d, it had the wrx ones in as it's meant to have the smaller spoiler on it, but the previous owner had changed it for an sti one.
Total difference, boot now lifts up via the internal boot release lever, won't drop down & slam shut as it used to, and no more rattles. Dead easy to fit & cheap to buy from a breakers. Got mine from one of the breakers on here, think it was mattyB?

Any chance you can post a pic of what these springs look like - I think I might need the same solution - just bought a hawkeye with a prodrive spoiler and the boot lid slams shut pretty hastily and won't open via the boot catch.

Hi mate, sorry I no longer own the car so can't take a pic. What you are looking for is two thin metal bars that go through lugs on the hinged end of the boot lid, and through lugs on the body, they have a couple of right angle bends in them. They are torsion bars rather than coiled springs. You need to replace them with some salvaged from an STi. Hope this helps. As someone had said above, Matty at MB developments should be able to sort you out, there's not normally any part he hasn't got.

A bit of a thread revival, but my WRX boot spring has snapped after 15 years of having an Sti spoiler, so that's how I came across this thread.
Just in case anyone else ever has the same issue of the boot rattle, I have identified what that was at least. The weight of the spoiler over a short period of time squashes the boot bump stops ever so slightly, this in turn allows enough play for the lock to rattle. Quick solution was to stick on additional rubber to the boot bump stop, job done, no more rattle. If unsure, you can test it by popping a bit of old rag under the bump stop, if the rattle stops, that was your problem. Hope that helps someone in the future. I wasted a ton of money trying to stop the rattle, was even advised by a so called specialist to replace the shocks with coilovers as that was the issue, it bloody wasnt!!
Now to find myself some springs.....

I imagine I'll be needing some replacement boot springs as well. Any idea where you plan to get your from?
