mad idea?
looking for opinions on a daft idea ive had. basically ive had my bug sti for around a year now and love it to bits. the vf 35 is a good turbo and its pulling well but id like earlier spool. for me its not about top end speed but getting there fast! ie acceleration. ive seen a hybrid td04 for sale with billet wheel upgrade. my car is on a conservative map at 300bhp on ecutek which was done before i bought the car. so the billet o4 would offer up similar power of 300 or thereabouts but im hoping with much better spool characteristics? is this an idiotic idea or worth considering? opinions welcome

I think you will see 300 on a hybrid but not 100 percent. You'll be better off with a Harvey trick up pipe and ported headers wich would increase spool by 200/ 300 rpm and a map tweak.

I think you guys will find it's more like 320/330. it's something i've looked into for my Blob daily driver. I was going to build one myself but having done price checking the cost of the parts and balancing it's only a slightly cheaper than buying one already done from Braveheart sti on an exchange basis.
I'm hoping with my new forged engine with avcs heads, de-cat up pipe and ported headers that i'll be at the top end of the scale and it goes like a scalded cat up to 100mph.
Might even show these big power boys a thing or two.

this is exactly what id hope for ditch. ive heard of standard td04,s occasionally doing 290 bhp so the billet surely will crack 300 and with the gearing of the bug sti,s 6 speed and avcs i,d think acceleration should be pretty rapid?

Not as rapid as a 5 speed.
But yes that's why i'm going for it too. I pretty much never go over 100mph when i'm having a play and as these cars don't like sustained high speed and fuel consumption goes through the roof, I tend to stick to about 80/85 on motorways too, even when traveling through Germany.
I don't see the point in going for 400bhp+ with all the cost involved when I can get the same if not better acceleration and a more responsive drive from a much smaller turbo at a fraction of the cost.
For me it's not about top end it's how you get there and I can't see anything this side of 500bhp leaving me until 120mph + and I won't be doing those sorts of speed on the road and this car won't see a track either.

this is pretty much word for word my thoughts on my car lol. looks like its a serious option to consider. is the billet a straight fit replacement for the vf35 then? front entry etc no faffing about?

Yeah straight swap, you could run it for a month to see if you like it or not then sell your vf35 and come out evens with a brand new turbo. win win
Great minds think alike.

Forgedmarco, it's the way forward mate.

I'm at 340 now not bothered about going higher but a brand new billet should last longer than an 80k old turbo

Hi, hoping some1 is still following this. Looking into replacing my td04 with a hybrid td04, I know of the unit that Andy Forrest has but never heard or the one from braveheart. Could any1 give me a little more info on this? Cheers guys

brd or bravheart racing developments is a guy from scotland who builds and modifys turbos and does engine mods etc. a few people on here and scottishscoobies run his turbos with great results. as said the hybrid td04 has (i think, dont quote me lol) a larger compressor side and a billet wheel with extended fins which allows 30 or so bhp over a standard 04 with almost the same very quick spool which results in boost coming on around 2500 rpm. im considering one as i know of one for sale. will update with any developments if i go ahead with it.

The hybrid billet TD04 with a Harvey up pipe should come in earlier than 2.5k rpm and take you to 100+ mph like a scolded cat.
I've had a standard VF 34 and while it's a cracking turbo I doubt it will be boosting anywhere near as low down in the rev range as the TD04, basically the difference between the two will remain the same like for like, so no matter what you do to the bigger turbo it's always going to spool at least 500 rpm slower than the smaller one.
I'm going to have to save some more pennies before I find out though.

yep that is an option on the vf35 but as ditch said it still wont spool like the hybrid td04. i can buy the hybrid then sell the 35 if it performs the way i want it to. im still toying with fitting my api ported headers and venturi up pipe and another map to see how that goes first with the vf35. decisions lol.....

It would be torquier (sp?) low down, of course, but that's not the same as accelerating fast once speeds build up

I've just upgraded my stock WRX PPP to a TD05 16G, Sti Up pipe, prodrive sports cat, 550 injectors, etc etc. And it gets into boost maybe 100rpm later than the TD04 did, if that, and I cannot notice any extra lag.
