yeah you should do with most temp sensors they are just resistors ntc or ptc

I have no idea what ntc or ptc means, I'm abit limited when it comes to electrics...

Basically I tested the wire through bulk head for power and it was good, then I used the muti meater for continuity on the sensor by putting one prong on each of the 2 pins and nothing happened so I'm guessing it had its day..

Just annoyed as I only bought it last year and the fifty quid a throw (((

ntc negative temperature coefficient ptc positive temp coefficient - negative as the temp rises the the resistance lowers and positive as the temp rises the resistance rises they work as a variable resistor so there should be continuity there that is with all the temperature sensors ive come across anyway

Not continuity across the sensor, no. It will have a resistance, so set your multimeter to a resistance range and look for a value - somewhere between 500 ohms and 2k I would think.

If it has infinite resistance then it is duff.

Rather then buy another gauge can't you just get another sender? Give the company a ring.

That is what I'm going to do.... I'm just want to test the oil temp sensor prior to pulling it just to be 100% sure that is what the issue is as there £40. - £50 each the sensors that is...

Thanks

It will show the same as if when the probes aren't connected to anything - the exact symbol or text depends on the meter.

Take your readings and post up here - happy to advise as whether the measured resistance seems normal or not.

I tried testing it for resistance and Cannot get any sort of reading just dose nothing the multi meater that is.... I watched a you tube clip to make sure I was doing it right and when I connected the mm prongs to the pins on the connector for the oil temp sensor it just did nothing...

Shame. If you want to post it to me I'm quite happy to double check it for you, just in case?
