Acceleration cut out and idle issues

Acceleration cut out and idle issues
Hi there,
Will be as quick as poss with the issue description. Any help much appreciated!
While driving my 98 Version 4 I gave it some semi-aggressive throttle and it cut out. I don't think it stalled but the Check Engine light came on. Back at the house I stopped the engine and restarted and the light went off.
Checked the codes and it came up with fault code 23 (MAF issue).
Have had the car a while and the acceleration cut out has only happened this once.
Did a quick bit of research and the things that have been mentioned are boost pipe cracks, solenoid issues, etc.
The forum thread that made most sense was one that linked the issue described above with an issue where the engine revs go up and down at idle. This idle issue has been happening to me for a long time, and it is not something I have been able to fix.
When first getting these idle issues I tried all sorts to fix, including swapping out my orange MAF for my mates equivalent one and the symptoms were exactly the same.
Somewhere else I read about a guy in a similar situation who found that the MAF wiring was at fault.
So:
1) Is there anyone that has any better ideas?
2) If my wiring theory above is possible how would I check this for sure?
Any help much appreciated!
Thanks!

Orange Mafs suffer from dry joints inside the top cover where the plug attaches. If you carefully cut round the square top with Stanley knife then look in at the circuit board you will see where the three prongs are soldered in the board. Check resolder and seal up again with silicone etc.
