I have been told that you might aswell change the water pump whilst the belt is off

As above, water pump, I changed the thermostat and I've read that people do the oil pump too.

Mileage is important, but so is age.
If it's a young motor, I'd leave the waterpump and oil pump. What's the point in disturbing an item that's well within it's service life?

At 48K I'd wait.

If it ain't broke, don't fix; When fudging about replacing parts you open up the risk of needlessly causing problems, like fitting a faulty part, or a non-genuine part (of poorer quality), getting an airlock and blowing the head gaskets, getting dirt/debris in the oil ways, messing up the crank oil seal and causing leaks etc.

So if in doubt about the oil pump - get a oil pressure guage. If in doubt about the thermostat/pump - check cooling temp stability via the OBDII diagnostics port (not the factory coolant guage - thats useless due to the huge dead-band) - it shouldn't budge by anymore than 10degrees once up to temp (so roughly 85 to 95 degrees), regardless of load, driving or heater setting.

BUT do change all idlers pulleys and tensioners (not all "belt kits" come with these). They are generally good for about 6 years/50K and usually you'll find at least one that'll have dry bearings.

Subaru water pumps are a steel wheel design that does NOT require throwing away ***** nilly.........unlike VAG cars and certain others it wont fall to bits just because you looked at the t/belt

we carry all parts / kits / racing belts in stock if required (and water pumps / oil pumps too if you feel the need)

you might want to think about changing to lightweight pulley's, these help with slightly increased throttle response, cost about £80-100
