simply buy the proper kit which includes both cleaning fluid and the correct oil the restore it to its former glory

would personally not use petrol

carry in stock and not expensive

Thanks for the reply and maybe i wasn't clear enough, i meant a proper k&n cleaning kit. They seem to produce a few different kits that appear to do the same thing, but i wasn't sure which one to get. Some kits are aerosol and a bottle, and the others are 2 bottles. Maybe they all do the same but i just wanted to be certain and get the right one first time

exactly why k&n should not be used on a MAF based induction. the oil it needs gets sucked threw the maf coating it and eventually destroying it. you need a non cleanable paper type filter

Whilst I fully agree that can and does happen, if the filter is cleaned and oiled properly and left to dry before using it then there's no problem. There should never be enough oil applied to the filter that it can drip, run or be sucked through.

The good old internet strikes again

i meant a proper k&n cleaning kit.
They do the same job - old and new stock, vary in quantities, aerosol or eco-friendly spray................

I expected a few comments about them being **** or f**king the maf, whatever. Scoobyclinic put the filter in 5 years ago and touch wood ive never had a problem with it. This is the first time i will be servicing the car myself though and i just wanted to make sure i get the right one. Thanks mate

K&N are NOT an issue for MAF's if oiled correctly (v.lightly) its generally the oiled foam type filters that can cause any issues

as for the cleaning kits then i prefer the non-aerosol type (you can still buy both kits)

As above, both types still available. Just depends on what method you prefer or find easier.
