Default Subaru impreza wrx 2005 overheat

While on the motorway the temp was below the half way point. Soon as I got local and give it a bit of boot,I could see the temp rise and as soon as I let go it come down again. When I turn it off and started it again the needle went in the middle. . Has this fault got to do with the thermostat

The thermostat is engine side of the bottom rad so would say so. If you take off, put it in a jug of boiling water, you'll soon see if it works or not
