upgrade or replace on rebuild
Can any one help? I have a 96 sti import waggon. What is the max bhp I can safely get from the engine. The engine is coming out in a week or two so what would you change when it's out if you where thinking big 500+in future

I suspected as much. Don't mind it being off the road for a while where would you start on the inside. (The mrs hates the car more than she hates me..mum's the word she isn't going anywhere)

The engine and gearbox will only handle around 300-320hp realisticly some say 350hp is the uppermost limit but this increases the likelihood of failure. You could stroker your engine to a 2.1 or buy a Newage STi short block and run it at 450hp hoping that it doesnt brake. For your gearbox, ideally you need a 6 speed or a PPG setup to handle the power. The others are mainly bolt ons I.e. turbo, injectors, brakes, suspension, etc.
If you want to forge your engine, im not sure if it is a CDB or ODB, you will need to change pistons, conrods, crankshaft, headgasket, headstuds (11/14mm?), and a larger/modified oil pump in addition to replacing all the old gaskets are worth doing as well.
