Default I went to clean my maf today and this is what i found.

My Car has not been to well recently, its been struggling and hesitating up in the rev range. On my way home from work last night the problem got noticeably worse and was popping and banging and would cut out with the clutch in and had a seriously lumpy idle. I limped it home and suspected either a pipe come off/air leak or dodgy maf sensor.

I lifted the bonnet this morning and couldnt see anything untoward, checked over all the boost pipes and all looked good. I decided to pull the maf out and give it a clean and to my horror this is what i found..

The foam filter from inside the pipercross viper kit had completely come apart and was totally strangling the maf sensor. If i was running mafless this would of gone straight through the turbo

These cost the best part of £200 and its not even covered 1000 miles. Its advertised as having a lifetime guarantee but i wont be replacing it with another one thats for sure.

Bloody hell.

A good advert to keep the OE airbox (unless you're running a FMIC?)

I was relieved in a way that it was nothing more serious, the foam looks like its all there so hopefully nothing made its way through. Standard airbox now in and car now running perfect. Think i will be buying a rcm cone and trumpet to replace it with..

How would that have got to your turbo?

Stick to standard box bud, its better for the car anyway, just have performance filter

If it would of made it past the maf probe it would of gone straight through the inlet pipe as it was half way there already.

Running 400+bhp so standard airbox no good now plus fitting a fmic in next couple of weeks so has to go anyway..

Induction kit doesn't add any better air flow than standard setup with performance filter?

Hi there

Wow,never seen something like this and as above I would straight away email Pipercross about this and would ask for full refund

As on yours previous thread I've recommended to you RCM induction if you want to run induction kit,on one thread is similar issue with HKS foam filter where something went through the turbo, due this I would stay away from any foam filter,if filter then K&N,Green Cotton or Cosworth

Hope you get sorted there

Thanks,Jura

Thanks Jura...I will be purchasing an RCM kit before it goes for a map tweak in a couple of weeks time.

Are you sure this is a genuine pipercross filter? Was in an ebay purchase?

I did in fact purchase this from ebay, the item was still new in the box and had never been fitted. The seller has supplied me with the original receipt and it was purchased from Pro R Racing (cross roads subaru) so im guessing its an original item

I've done a bit of searching myself and doesn't look like Pipercross suffer from a huge fake product issue like some other manufacturers, so chances are it is a genuine one!

I'd certainly be taking this up with Pipercross directly. Not sure you can get Pro R Racing involved as the product was second hand to you.

I will email pipercross but because i wasnt the original purchaser i wont be holding my breath in regards to a positive outcome.

You can mod the snorkel to make it straight through, add a panel filter and you will have a nice intake system unless you are going for big power.

I have genuinely had the exact same issue on a mr2 turbo.

Equine maintenance and I pulled the filter off and half of it was in the filter and the other half was in the pipe hanging on by a thread

will never use another kit like that again!
