Default VF28 on a Hawkeye WRX?

Hi all,

Been thinking about a turbo upgrade for a little while now. I have done a few mods and think the stock TD04 is about at it's (safe) limit and needs to be replaced for a bit more go.
I am not looking to have a 350bhp+ car just want to make it more a drivable. 300-320 would be ample.

Current engine mods are
HRC fuel pump
Silicone Y pipe
Pro-R air filter
Centre exhaust pipe removed.
2nd cat removed
Scorpion back box
Map to suit mods

So anyway onto the turbo choices.. after some looking into it I think a VF28 would still keep the power coming lower than say a VF43? but is a VF28 a good choice? will it fit ok? anything other I should consider?

Please no chocolate piston comments on the 2.5. I am willing to take the gamble and forge down the line if I need to.

cheers.

vf35 would be a better option if you want to find a cheapish upgrade

An Andy Forrest Hybrid TD04 would be something very special on a 2.5 for your bhp target. I can imagine full boost by 2200rpm :0

If you meet an STI, it'll think it's been...

...by a train.

Not sure if AF still sells them but one may pop up for sale somewhere sooner than later.

Hi guys, cheers for replies. I had also considered a VF35 but they seem to be few and far between coming up for sale?!

The hybrid TD04 sounds interesting. I do like how the power comes in low but the stock one runs out of puff all too quickly.
My issue with that is sending mine off or purchasing a 2nd one to send off. Finding a used hybrid for sale would be a huge bonus.

Just to confirm though would I hit any issues fitting a VF28 or a VF34? oil and coolant pipes etc in the same place?
Or is it basically a like for like swap?

I'm also scratching my head about a bigger turbo on my Hawkeye WRX, something to reach 1.3 bar and approx 310-320 bhp. Have you considered the TD05-16g?

All exactly the same fittings/diameters, the banjo bolt will have slightly different flow characteristics so use the one that comes with the turbo.
I am running a vf24/28 (3" decat, decat uppipe, sti pinks etc and modify/map myself) and it is quite a decent turbo to be honest and will be hitting 18psi around 3500 so a little slower to spool up than the td04 but can be made to come in with quite a slap.

G10 - I have considered a TD05-16g but it seems to be difficult to be sure if its a proper one or a Chinese copy. Are they not a bit old technology now (but then guess the VF28 is old tech now)
My other concern was if they would be a direct fit or not.

cheers for clearing that up for me Brendy. Good info on the banjo bolt, didn't know that.
I don't think spool will be much of an issue on the 2.5 engine. Read a few times the extra 500cc makes turbos spool well due to more gasses being chucked into exhaust.

ho hum, decisions decisions lol

For what its worth, running 18psi on both the td04 and vf24 (on my 2 litre), the difference was 300 rpm with the td04 ramping psi up quicker until 3500rpm where the vf takes over and runs past it.

Did you have any piston / head gasget issues with that set up?

Good point G10.. also interested to know that.

The Chinese/eBay turbos are very tempting at the price they are... but can I trust them?

VF28 is a great turbo ... 43 would be a more obvious upgrade for the 2.5 though

I really like VF28 equipped cars, I've driven a few with them fitted. Seems to get overlooked in favour of the VF35 but after owning both I certainly wouldn't favour the VF35. VF28's seem to come up cheaper too.

Think this is the one I'd go for if my Turbo expired.

Crops up time and time again. SC claim it will make 428? with supporting mods.

Anyone know at what power it's most efficient at? I don't really want over 350bhp.

43's do not seem to come up that often. And do they not do a bit more than my targeted output?

VF28 came up at the right price so went for it.
What I now need to do is look into maps. I have a tactrix cable and to date have done my own mapping. Mapping a different to stock turbo is an unknown... Anyone know of any open source mappers willing to help with a map? Happy to pay for it.
