Default Improving induction noise

After a quick search its quickly become apparent that changing my cars (02 Bug STI PPP with Ecutek map) induction to a cone is a bad idea for a number of reasons. However, I've always like a bit of induction noise over exhaust noise and the 'chatter' of recirc'd air being dumped into the inlet is loads better than a dump valve/BOV.

So, is there anyway I can improve the sound of the induction/turbo without needing a remap or leaning my engine out? Not after more power, just a little more noise if possible.

Strangely fitting a green cotton panel filter made my induction noise very slightly louder/different then the OE filter... Maybe remove the snorkel part/any pipe work pre filter? (however performance wise it is supposed to be better with it) Or the bonnet sound deadening mat? That's about all I can think of without changing induction which as you say will probably cause issues.

Hi Karl,

I only really know classics but I'm assuming newages have a resonator box in the inner wing? on a later classic a pipe from the airbox goes into the inner wing, down in to a big plastic resonator behind the arch liner and then back into the engine bay to a vent on the front panel. Removing this resonator makes a big difference on a classic, (turbo spool and induction are much improved sound wise) and I'm sure will do the same with a newage assuming they have a similar set up.

Here you go.. these pictures will help you see how the system is set up :-)

To start with you can simply remove the resonator assembly altogether so you can see the difference it makes! However I found this too much and I doubt it's very efficient, so in the end I cut off the resonator box and then refitted the pipe.

Note this is a wheel arch liner out job but not sure of the specifics for a newage.

I have contemplated removing the whole inner wing resonator/snorkel system on my classic so that it just leaves the standard airbox drawing air direct from the inner wing rather than thru the resonator etc, wondering if theres any point tho or if it would make a difference to sound and or performance (my car is remapped and i can tweak the map if needed)

hmmmm........

Lots of people used to bin them but there was a thread a while ago with dyno results showing that it was marginally better for performance to keep it.

Replace the filter for a pair of tights,if it doesn't raw then,it never will lol if you do try this, only do it to test if noise changes. If it does then you know to search for a filter that'll make a similar noise.
K&N used to do the 57i kit and my mate had one on his corsa gsi and it made it
Sound like a grand tourismo car lol.i fitted one on my cavalier sri and it did make it growl but nothing like it done to the corsa for some reason?

Thanks for the suggestions gents, will have a look at the resonator at the weekend.

If that fails it might be old skool drilling the airbox lid!

A silicone intake hose changed the noise on mine slightly. I've also removed the snorkel on mine and fed a large air feed from the fog light to the OE box. I think Perrin claim 10bhp from the silicone hose too! (which means about 2.7bhp to you or me)

Removing the resonator is the way forward if you want to get the most from your standard airbox, as its whole purpose is to quieten down the induction side, I wouldn't suggest just removing the resonator and binning the whole pipe, rather cut the box off the pipe and refit the pipe, this in itself will make a significant change without any performance loss.

It's pointless doing anything else until you've tried this really.

And don't drill the airbox lid, air feeds through the lower section and up through the filter, drilling the lid will only let unfiltered air in. you could drill the lower section but it wouldn't be the right way, akin to drilling holes in an exhaust to increase the sound rather than just removing the silencer!

My induction noise was quite violent when my vac hose popped off the actuator. Sounded like a jet fighter plane passed overhead.

I'd love to be safely running whatever boost it was when I was hovering around fuel cut. It pulled beautifully. I honestly thought I was going out the back window with my ill fitted bucket seat.

The resonator box is there for the air flow across the MAF. Removing the resonator changes the air flow and it has been shown previously on here to make no difference. That said, mine has been on the shelf for two years and the induction noise is much better (Classic turbo MY00). With the usual mods and racedynamix remap I've got 280 HP and 295 lb/ft and everything seems fine (just need to replace the MAF every year as usual for a Classic.
