Default Can someone explain Anti Roll Bars please

Hi All,

I know it probably sounds a bit of a stupid question but can somebody please explain exactly how an ARB works? I know it obviously controls body roll- but there are lots of different thicknesses etc?

Any help appreciated, and try to keep the to a minimum lol

I guess the crudest way of putting it
Is think of it as a strut brace on the bottom of the car that makes the car more rigid with less flex.

In detail

First, the stiffer swaybar increases the load on the outside rear tyre during cornering. This reduces
the adhesion of that particular tyre so the rear-end of the vehicle becomes more unstable, offsetting some of the WRX's inherent understeer.

Second - assuming a reasonable amount of chassis rigidity - a stiffer rear 'bar will also result in slightly less roll at the front
of the vehicle. This better distributes the cornering loads on the front tyres, partially relieving the tortured outside front tyre.

The third benefit of increased rear roll stiffness is more consistent alignment angles due to reduced suspension travel.

The above detail taken from here -

Put simply an ARB is a spring that twists with body roll.
Stiffer/thicker spring results in less roll.
Point of rotation (ie where the drop link is mounted) results in less roll the closer in it is (shorter lever).

And don't forget that most Scoobs respond better to a slightly stiffer arb at front, NOT at rear.

REALLY? That is literally the opposite of what I have been reading? people generally saying just chage rear to 24mm and leave front.

Suggest you have a read of this thread relating to ARBs if you are considering upgrading.

I've now gone back to standard after recently discovering my ARBs were have a significant effect on my suspension settings and general comfort.

Cheers everyone... I'm now even more confused as to wether I should uprate ARB's now haha. basically I have just fitted some ABW arches and want to lower my coilovers back down (Raised it as I put wider wheels on and wasnt sure on new ride height) basically I am now worried that I will get too much body roll and the wheels will rub on the arch (And being fibreglass destroy them pretty quickly) so I suppose the question I am asking is how can I eliminate the body roll? are ARB's the answer? is there a better solution?

My advice and indeed what I have done, is change the standard bushes for polly bushes and alloy drop links all round, although that said I also have a Cusco rear roll bar brace, I am also considering after recently finally managing to push my car hard for the first time since changing a few things, thinking of putting a 22mm front roll bar on as well, as I still have a slight amount of front end roll on hard cornering, or I might try an under brace for the front depending on what pops up cheap on here first.

I also changed the steering rack bushes to Polly items while I was at it.

HTH.
