Default Exhaust cover...to fix, or not to fix?!

Afternoon all, scooby forum n00b here.
After investigating an increasingly worsening rattle under the beast, the exhaust cover is to blame (rusted through, level with the driver/passenger door on the mid pipe).
Nothing on the actual exhaust as yet... and I can put up with the rattle for the moment... but is/when is this likely to cause a problem? Reluctant to put too much effort in as only planning on running the beast until the next MOT but I definitely want it to last until then (Jan '16)! Beast in question is an ever-reliable, used and abused 2001 3l Outback.
Thanks in advance!

Why thanks! Is there an award for stupid first replies to threads too, or did you already win that?

I'm asking the above because that is what the guy at the garage told me once we had got it over the pit... Fond of scooby's as I am, I am no mechanic. So I don't know if it has the potential to get worse.

Somebody with a sense of humour,, I hope I won that award I never win anything! ok on a serious note, the heat shield may be ok until you sell on but there easy enough to remove if the noise gets too much!

perfect, thanks! I just didn't want to get fleeced by a mechanic. I think beast will likely go for parts rather than sell on tbh but good to know it's not a serious thing. Ta!

Penny washer/repair washer may stop it, depends how rotten it is around the fixing points.

Thanks. Will try and get a pic of it as guy at garage wasnt too explanatory... and as we've established I'm not too knowledgeable!
