Default Modded Oil Pumps

I'm going to be ramping the power of my WRX up to about 340-350bhp after fitting a new turbo, pinks, remap etc. Before I do that I'm going to change the cambelt and while I am at it was wondering whether it's worth upgrading the oil pump.

I am going to replace the modine with a thermostatically controlled oil cooler but I am not sure what pump to go for and what the differences are. I've seen modded 10mm, 11mm and 12mm.

I know 10mm is standard and the mod makes it more reliable but does it flow more oil and maintain better pressure or should I go for a larger pump?

How big is the oil cooler?
Have you dual or single AVCS heads?

The size of oil pump all depends on how much oil needs to be pushed round the engine.

If you have AVCS heads a massive oil cooler the size of a radiator ect running a billion hp ...then you would need a 12mm
A 12mm on a lesser set up can cause more harm than good.

My gut feel from what you are saying is stick with a 10mm

(After careful consideration I run an 11mm on my current set up)

Hi John

Personally I wouldn't upgrade to modified oil pump,we run on our wagon at 350bhp standard size oil pump,we run oil cooler for gearbox(that time we run 4EAT-autobox) and for engine too we run oil cooler without the issue, although JDM WRX comes with AVCS heads still we are been OK

On 2.1 we run 10mm modified oil pump(on modified oil pump is only modified pressure relief valve I think) and we are been OK at 490bhp

On 2.35L we are run 11mm Oil pump which has been OK too

As above Steve said, depends on setup, but I would stick with 10mm oil pump

Hope this helps

Thanks,Jura

It's a 19 row mocal cooler with standard WRX (non-AVCS) heads. Is it worth replacing the pump to get the pressure relief valve modded one or are failures quite uncommon - my oil pressures seems to be good although the temps are a little high for my liking often knocking on 100 degrees hence the reason for the cooler and the question about whether to mod the pump at the same time...

failures aren't very common and for your spec the largest i would suggest is 10mm (std or modded) - they flow more than enough oil at good pressure for what required

as for makes then i will only use/supply RCM modded ones as they are good value for money and actually have some work done/parts upgraded

Cheers Alyn, I'm presuming that's the one you have quoted me for and does that include the gaskets/seals?

there is no seal as such as they use the likes of Threebond on the block/pump face but yes with a crank seal......

And check and tighten the screws ,if needed, n the rear of the pump. If they work loose , oil pressure will drop

You can get both of them from import car parts for £50 cheaper.

pricing is best dealt with individually for specific builds direct with the office

not sure of you spec but pretty sure you will NOT require a 12mm pump - biggest is not best
