Default Cambelt Timing Intervals

Picked up the 05' STI last weekend. Was made aware of a cambelt being required and this was taken into account of the cost.

Last cambelt was done in late 09' with 35k on the clock. It's now sitting at 84k and I've got the car booked in at Subaru 4 U on the 30th of May. I'm not going to be doing an awful lot of driving between now and then (500 miles max). I appreciate nobody on this forum is psychic but is there any reason to be worried or any early signs i should be aware of?

Thanks in advance

Yeah, it's booked for the 30th of May as it's the first Satuday they have available. Wondering whether to get a weekday off work.

The cambelt (genuine) is very reliable. As you are on the 50k mileage interval it should be done. At 84k and assuming no idlers/tensioner were replaced at the last change (at 34k they should have been fine) be prepared for some replacements.
The genuine belt alone is around £135!

Great, thanks for the advice. I've just gone to order but a little confused as to which kit/exactly what i need to get. Gates or Dayco? Is it worth getting the kit with water pump included as well?

Lastly, the car's booked in for a Service + Cambelt @ Subaru4you - They do a reduced price on doing both together at £309+VAT. The saving seems pretty good, is it worth going through Import car parts?

The most important thing to check if you go through the specialist is that they replace ALL idlers, tensioner and cambelt.
As some "specialists" are rather crafty and list a cambelt change, at just that - a cambelt only change.

Personally i would only recommend a Genuine Subaru water pump, as i have tried all of the aftermarket ones and the quality is not the same as the Genuine unit, and the threads i have had strip out of the water pump (aisin) at the correct torque setting.

Just make sure that where ever you do get the cambelt kit from, that all bearings are either Koyo, NSK or NTN which is true Original Equipment for Subaru.
