Default td04 to td05

Hello, my uk 2000 99 is going in for a remap with andy forrest in august. ive got a decat, walbro fuel pump, panel filter and resonator delete. Thinking since im already going for a map i might sling in a bigger turbo. currently looking at a td05 16g. Is this a straight swap? will i need any other brackets etc?

many thanks

Your TD04 turbo should be a front entry setup while the TD05 is side entry,it can be converted easily enough though for a front entry set up.It is a good turbo upgrade for your impeza model, but not exactly a straight swap but still done quite easily once the turbo has been converted.SJ.

Also consider that the TD05 can create quite a bit more boost so your fueling has to be spot on to prevent engine failure.SJ.

In all honesty buying a second hand turbo especially from ebay is something i have never done and never would, unless you was looking to get it serviced/rebuilt in the first place. Its a platform with hardly any support when/if things go wrong, try sourcing one from a trusted seller from this site, ask some of the quality breakers if they have one in atleast you know you will be getting a quality part in the first place.SJ.

Also looks like a Chinese cheap job, you can buy them new for £150, heard a few people had them on here with no problems, but remember if it did go wrong its going to cause you problems. Big companies put there turbo's though many tests that some of these cheap turbo's have not been subjected to.

Also says nothing about play in the shaft, worth asking about, and if it is branded or not.

Cheers, might give it a wide birth. It was just a thought. Might get it remapped as it is and save up for a better turbo

As i said other people on here have run cheap Chinese turbo's with no problems at all. i've been tempted myself as there are some TD05's on ebay now from china for £179.

If you going to buy one, i'd buy new. But as i stated before these cheap Turbo's are not tested to the degree more expensive ones are.

This video shows how doggy they can be.

This bad boy makes 1.7 bar, clearly not made in China.

Don't knock them until you've tried them

I fitted a chinese turbo to my WRX a while ago, saw the 150-180 quid ones but i decided to go for a sightly better presented one with an actual brand name stamped onto it (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200555333107 no idea why its for sale for over 2 grand at the moment but cost me £249.99) straight swap, so far no issues what-so-ever (time will be the best judge of that), seems damned well built for the price (my mechanic mate who helped me to fit it agrees and he has dealt with allot of far more reputable brands such as toyota and Garett). Running standard boost through it until i get it remapped and while it was wearing in. However even on the standard 14PSI it delivers the power so much better than the standard TD04. A real TD05 would perform even better than my chinese one so go for it if you can!

Thanks for the info. I've read mixed reviews on them. Another thing to think about.

I would get it mapped ASAP or you might not have an engine left.
