Default Will I ruin the driveability ?

As some of you may know I have had some bad luck in the past with my Imprezas.

I currently have a 54 plate blobeye STi Type UK (widetrack) which is currently running 330/330.

Standard VF35, panel filter, full de-cat system (2.5 inch) and obviously a re-map.

I really like the car but as always you start wanting more power.

In my garage are a lot of bits left over from my last project which I could use to up the power, these include a new Andy Forrest TD05 20G, 650cc injectors, full 3" system including Cobra sports CAT, Pipercross Viper with cold air feed and a brand new front mount intercooler.

I am worried that I will loose the 'driveability' of the current setup if I fit the TD05, don't want to do it and regret it ?

Anybody have any thoughts ?

I would normally speak to my mapper but sadly JGM is no longer with us.

Hi there

I wouldn't think you will ruin the driveability with TD05-20G,TD05 is slightly laggier than VF35,but everything depends on parts which you will be adding and running as i would go with Harvey Up pip as first thing if you want to run TD05-20G

With Harvey up pipe you should gain on the spool up and yours spool will be in reasonable RPM and will not feel as laggy

I've tried in past classic with TD05-20G and really I love it how it feels and how it spools,on yours should spools bit faster as you are running AVCS which can helps in spool up

And I wouldn't use Pipercross Viper, this induction is foam based and I don't have good experience with foam based inductions, due this I would rather swap for K&N or Green Cotton

Not sure if you will be regretting this, but in my view you will be pretty happy with performance and how it feels, although can be slightly laggier, how much laggier hard to say

Hope this helps and good luck there

Thanks,Jura

Sounds like you're heading to a very similar direction I went with my widetrack, mine for reference:

TD05 20G (Harvey one with billet compressor wheel)
RCM headers with HS Up-Pipe
ID 1000 injectors / adjustable FPR
Japspeed FMIC
RCM cone
Afterburner 2.5" catless system with Prodrive backbox

That made 400bhp on Tesco99 and my previous incarnation of the car was 325bhp with the standard panel filter/decat/remap etc.

Car is obviously slower to spool, and plenty of people warned me so. It makes peak torque (360ftlbs) at ~4750rpm and peak power at 6300rpm (but holds power well to the redline)

I drive my car a fair bit on track, and what initially caught me out was having to change down into 2nd for previously 3rd gear corners - which makes it feel like I'm not carrying speed as well. I'm almost certain that 370bhp on a quicker turbo like an SC36 or whatever would result in a faster laptime.

For driving on the road however doesn't expose the downsides to this setup as much, in my opinion. You get a nice big shove in the back when it does eventually come in and that's a lot of fun.

I'd be interested to see what the setup is like with retaining the TMIC, to see if that makes a significant difference or whether it's negligible.

I had a 20G on a EJ20 and though it was great on the track, it was horrible for normal driving. I have now swapped the EJ20 for a forged EJ25 and love it both on and off track.

You can fit a much larger turbo than a 20g and still have a very driveable car. Mine has an SC46 which in effect turns it into two cars. One that poodles about like an ordinary saloon (as long as you keep it below 3.5k rpm) and the other that takes off like a scalded cat once 4k rpm is reached and exceeded. The difference is in the gears you choose. Higher gears/low revs for poodling, low gears/higher revs for explosive acceleration!

Yes, forged 2 ltr with the usual added extras. It makes a relatively weedy 100bhp ft at 3k revs (poodling about range) but over 400bhp at 5.5k revs. Power then keeps climbing steeply to 6.5k when it levels off. Makes a nice road car.

you driven a 2.5 to see what you think for comparison?

2.5 isnt as revy, but has more low down grunt so drives very differently

I've driven a couple of standard 2.5s and to honest they weren't in the same league, to be fair they couldn't be. I understand a properly modded 2.5 has a lot more torque than the 2.0 but the 2.0 is what I've got!

That's what mine is, Harvey-built, 2.5 forged.
HS TD05 20G (tweaked by the great man himself),
FMIC,
740cc injectors,
Full 3" exhaust,
Harvey up-pipe,
Tubular headers.

Mapped by Bob Rawle, the turbo made 427 on Harvey's 2.0, dunno what it makes on mine, Bob estimated north of 400 with similar torque, but damn, it flies.

Yet is tame around town and does decent mpg, (for a Scoob).
