Default Wrx Engine Help!

Hi guys, the bottom end went on my 04 Blob Wrx. Looks like the cheapest option is to source another engine. Can anyone confirm if the bugeye WRX is the same as the blob? Struggling to find any engines at a decent price!

Many thanks

Martyn

Yeah the bugeye long block is the same as the blob, but you'd be better off getting yours rebuilt properly. You might end up buying a lemon that throws its hand in after a few weeks.

Def. agree but I was actually in the process of selling it. I fancied a change and after what's happened, I have the fear! Just want to get it gone. Would I be right in saying then if I got a bugeye engine, it would just be a case of putting it in along with my existing loom, manifold turbo etc is there anything else i would need?

Thanks for your help. Much appreciated

tbh i;d try and sell it as a rolling shell then, by the time you source and fit an engine it will cost you more than the car is worth even with an engine in it.

I might be wrong here. Correct me if I'm wrong though (probably am!)

Let's say engine is £800 and my mate puts it in for £300 plus oil etc.
The car must be worth £4000 roughly.
Rolling shell would sell for £1500?
Or have I got the figures wrong?

This is very rough!!

4k would be for a mint car, and given its had a new engine it will put people off, so prob nearer 3k at best.

£800 for an engine is pot luck if its any good or not and again unless you can prove the history etc of the engine will put people off.

Whoever buys it will ant it to have a new cambelt, tensioners, oil filters etc etc so add another £400 at least.

If it came from a garage and had a warrenty you might get nearer 4k from it. afraid thats just the way it is

show me one that hasent had a rebuild /new engine. they are all ticking time bombs. a basic rebuild will cost you around 2.5k give or take, the cheapest way would be to use a classic bottom end, head gaskets done. feel sorry for the new owner lol.

Couldn't agree more! My cars have always been pristine. Anything it needs, it gets at whatever cost. I keep every receipt for ANYTHING done too! It's actually the first car I have ever had any major bill for.
Im in two minds what to do. It's either spend £2500 to rebuild a car I don't want or spend around £1500 and sell it and hope the new engine is ok. I would feel terrible if it went boom again though.
Like you say, they are all ticking time bombs...

Your engine is a EJ205 I did mine this summer ( bottom end only ) got the bottom end from www.wms-racing.com Andy does these to a variety of specs but I went for Sti pistons with new rings / ACL bearings and a higher capacity oil pump. I think I paid about 1k to get it to Germany.

If you don't fancy doing it yourself google johnpyemotors.com or for a really good build David at dob@apiengines.com

Once you have the block you will need to clean up the head , get new gaskets and cambelt kit, mine all came from Advanced motors in Bristol ,
I reused my cylinder bolts and did all the re-assembly myself. I'm on a tight budget but I reckon I got this all back together under thousand four hundred
pounds , I added a new radiator so it rounded it to 1500, I have ported the heads bit and headers a bit , added heat lagging to the down and uppipes. While you are about it , you should do your clutch Mark at Lateralperformance had the best offers on this. Mine was new 18 months ago and fairly new so I just cleaned it up.

I took it slow over 12 weeks so I guess I took a long time , but my shoulder has an impingement after a bit of metal was taken out so its not easy for me.

I'm on a JGM map/TD05 16G/large intercooler/550cc/255lph/Prodrive Cat .
The car has 500 miles on it since and I am just about to do the oil / filter.
Still using 1.0 bar max at the moment. but will switch over to 1.45 bar after the rings bed in. Everythings going well for now

Anyway do take a look at the build tips and pictures. Good luck with yours.

Thanks for Al the replies. I'm going to see what exactly has happened to cause the knock. I think it's game over for the engine. I was driving on the motorway around 70mph when it went. Then it completely died. Wasn't much I could have done. I was thinking of just replacing the bottom end but I actually don't know what caused all this in the first place. The day before, the diagnostics said it was misfiring on 1 and had a maf issue (although it drove spot on) (p0102 and p0113 from memory) And 3 days before all of this, I had an oil change done.

Would this shed any light on why this happened? Or is it just Sod's law that it went?

Thanks again for all the help.

Cheers

Also can anyone advise the price I could realistically achieve selling the car as is?

2004 San Marino WRX Blob. 96,000 Miles.
Extensive history.
Clutch done 6 months ago. (Exedy)
Full Cobra system and decat.
Bodywork and interior in excellent condition.
Eibach Pro kit 6 months old.
Poly Wishbone bushes, Poly Arb etc...
Badly knocking engine!

Many thanks.

Lets say the car is mint (including engine), then you may get £5k if you wait for the right buyer.

I'd say knock off £3k as it needs a new engine. So £2k, maybe less. How long will it take to find someone who wants a Blob WRX sans engine?

What's caused it??! 96,000 miles, wear, that's about it! Very common failure with a high mileage EJ. The bearings just aren't very wide
