Default Hybrid TD04 or STi (VF35 etc) Turbocharger

Currently have a stock TD04 turbo on my '02 WRX.

Weighing up the merits of upgrading to a STi spec turbo (not decided which yet) or fitting a hybrid TD04 (SC320 for example). Does anyone have experience of both setups - fitted one first and then tried the other route?

I have port-matched exhaust and Harvey up-pipe to fit as I'm keen to minimise lag and prioritise drivability as the car is my daily. So a hybrid TD04 is attractive. Power claims seem to be +/- 310bhp with similar torque. Whereas with an STi spec turbo, I could expect 5-10% more power?

Would the extra power actually be noticeable on a typical journey? Is it appreciable or does the improved response of the smaller turbo negate any gains of the larger? Or vice versa perhaps?

Any one have any actual experience of both setups or driven both to compare?

Not experianced a td04 hybrid but i had a vf28 on my bugeye made 336bhp with supporting mods and spool was very good. Cheaper turbo than a vf34/35 and made similar power.

Some base Turbo info - Approx max power out puts

TD04 280hp
TD04 Andy Forrest Hybrid 320hp (quicker spool than the 16g)

TD05 16g 320-340hp
TD05 18g 350/360 -380hp Harvey did a ported version
TD05 20g 380-390hp

VF24 330hp
VF28 320hp
VF34 350/360hp
VF35 340hp

I have flow figures for quite a few turbos but can not find the figures for VF34/35!

However Harvey matched up pipes to turbo set ups.

So my question would be what turbo was your Harvey up pipe matched to?
Then call Alyn at AS Peformance ....and ask him if that up pipe was deemed to be compatible with any other turbo as well, if any?
Then you have your short list of what you turbos you can fit and get the most out of the up pipe you have.
