rebuild or replace?
just got my self another scooby, had 3 classics a few years ago and looking for a new car found myself looking for another scooby as nothing had come close since, so found a 01 blobeye wrx wagon. car itself is nice and straight but engine(s) came in several boxes of parts. short history of car big ends went so second hand motor fitted then that started knocking too!
so do i rebuild the two motors ive got into one good one? only want a standard engine no hugh power, however if i go down this route is there anything to replace to insure against big ends going again? uprated oil pump, uprated bearings, baffled sump etc? im confident in building motor (but its been a while) advantages of this are as funds a bit tight i can build up as i have spare cash.also whats rough costs?
or do i just save up and buy another standard engine, possibly upgrading to make it reliable,
car will be used everyday and possibly a very occasional trackday

If you know what you are doing I would rebuild , updated crank bearings and arp head bolts and updated head gaskets ,is it worth a rebore and updated Pistons but only if you are after more power , or what you have has done a fair amount of mileage , I would hope doing it yourself is a lot cheaper than another rebuilder doing it
