Just taken it for a half hour drive and the sound is still there?? No louder and no quieter?? Could it be the start of something major?

Just take it back bud, wouldn't risk it. Either way why should you put up with a knocking noise, if you have paid good money for it.

I've had a few slappers in my time!!! Deffo sounds like piston slap although its quite bad for a low mileage non forged engine.

Does it happen through out the range or just say, 2500rpm for a couple of hundred revs above then dies off?
When I got it, it only came on at those revs, eventually it gets worse but the onset is quite a narrow band of revs where it happens, mine was certainly louder though.

Looks like that's what I'll have to do. The dealer is over 4 hrs away so hopefully they will be understanding and refund me and send a transporter to collect the car.

A thicker oil may be required

I'd give them a ring see what they say. You could pay to get it transported to them, depends how you paid for it. If with cash then best drive it back down to them, and make sure they have money to give you back. What date did you buy it?
