Fix,sell,Break,store???My classic heartbreak :(
I've been having a few problems recently.
Car is a v3 sti non standard.
It recently developed a knock, first thought to be valve train related.
Clearances checked and all were tight so thought this was the problem,we took the engine out and reshimmed to get the clearance back thinking this would cure the knocking/tapping.
Engine went back in and the original knock from the LH head was still there,as well as being really tappity from the RH head!
I took the cam covers off today to recheck the clearance and everything was ok on the LH head but on the RH head one of the exhaust valves was way out of spec (measured 0.35mm) So looked at my sheet with all the data/measurements and we had miscalculated by 0.1mm,so thought "I'm not surprised it's tappity on that RH head" but why is it still knocking on the LH which is all in spec now?
Anyway long story short,,took it for a drive around the block and the knock started to get a bit louder, then heard a crack/pop,suddenly the knock turned in to a proper knock,,,bottom end letting go!!!
Oil pressure was still nice @ 5bar but I'm not trying to kid myself, car needs a full rebuild GUTTED!!
Ive only had the car 7 month and paid £5600,not sure what my next move should be?
So I'm asking for some advice/opinions.
Spec: v3 sti,very clean and no rust.JDM 6 speed conversion.Twin scroll SC42.ESL ecu.Brembo rear and SC 6 pot front brakes.Standard shocks with updated springs.Uprated ARB's. Gauges,AFR,boost oil pressure etc
Do I store the car until I can afford a rebuild from a proper builder,do I store the car and slowly rebuild it myself,do I break the car and sell the parts,do I sell it as it is?
The car is my daily drive,we do have a garage(albeit full of crap) could clear it out and make room for it if I choose to stick with it.
Apologies for rambling on,heartbroken to say the least!!!
Just be nice to see what you guys would do/have done in a similar situation.
Edit: receipts show it has a forged bottom end With 25k miles(built in 2008 by Graham Goode) but I can not be 100% sure this was still in the car when I bought it?
Cheers
Rich

I've just had a quick look, but your right you could just be buying another problem, your talking about grand delivered for STI engine looks like. Then fitting.
Don't think you should break it. Try listing on here, and if no luck then store in garage i'd say.

Tempted to take a gamble on an engine for a gran(could fit myself) just to get me back on the road.
Need to have a good think, today has been a mare

If you wanted a quickish/cheapish fix I'd look into buying an engine from Matt the breaker on here.
Normally has newage sti long engines going for around £1350.
You could sell the avcs heads and recoup some cash.
Fit your sti heads and have a engine good for 450 plus which would suit the spec you already have.
With you able to do the work yourself your saving a load on labour and will come in a lot cheaper than a fully built new engine.

rebuild it yourself. I rebuilt mine for less than 300 quid all be it, it was only due to head gasket failure so I didn't need a new crank or need to clean out any debris etc. but I rebuilt with fresh acl bearings, gen sti mls gaskets, water pump, seals etc.
Ive done three 3 tracks days on the rebuild and its still purs like a kitten.
got all my bits from importcarparts.co.uk

Sorry to hear about the car I've been following some of your posts about the knocks
There is a 2.1 stroker up for grabs at the moment

Store it mate take time out and decide whatyou want to do and save for a rebuild, believe me you will regret breaking it or spur of the moment selling(ive been there) good luck what you do though sorry to hear its not good news.

Sorry to hear the bad news mate.
My advice would be to split the engine you have and see what the damage is first off, also get to see what's in there too.
I would be tempted to rebuild it myself, if you're capable of taking it out and putting it back then you're probably going to be able to rebuild it too, it's really not that difficult.
Problem with a 2nd hand engine (especially newage) is you're still going to have to buy new head gaskets, then you'll want to do all the seals so that's a full seal and gasket kit, then while it's in your face you may as well split the block, check the crank, rods and pistons, fit fresh bearings, so by the time you've done all that you'd be better off putting the £1k cost of the 2nd hand engine towards a full fresh rebuild with a £1200 quid 2.1 stroker kit.
Reality is if you want it to last you need to do it properly.
There's no such thing as a cheap quick fix with these cars.

Just feeling a bit low right now, need to pick my self up and get on with it,It's the hand I've been dealt and I'm sure I'll feel a bit better in the morning.

So I would be ok to put my heads, manifold etc onto a newage engine?
This could open up my options
Thanks for the advice,I think if I took my time and gained some confidence then I could rebuild it myself? I guess I won't know what the full story is and what I would need until I split the block.

Yeh cheers jay, don't want to get rid so would be a last option.
Thanks ditch, good advice,I could always get a cheap runabout or even dig the bicycle out to get to work and back, then I could spend summer with some time to rebuild.
@53 I will keep you in mind for 1st dibs on the ts

I did the newage engine on sti v3 heads a few years back, ran sweet as a nut and made 522bhp on a rotated gt30. So it is something I would seriously consider, as it will also give you time to strip your current one down at your leisure and see whats actually happened
#27
What ever you do you need to try and work out why it has happened, if you still have good oil pressure is the mapping ok ?
No good rebuilding a rebuilt and killed engine without knowing or it will just happen again.

I defiantly will look at newage bottom end options banny, wasn't sure if this was an option until I started this thread.

Sorry to hear this bud, was rooting for you it was a problem not related to rod knock
Hard choice, does the car hold value if stored, repaired and rebuilt etc, or sell and then buy another
hmmm, only you know if you have the time to fix it before it becomes a barn find lol

Looks like theres some good options there for you Rich, especially newage bottom end, or even if you can fit an engine yourself seen a few on ebay fairly priced. Although i'd only get one from a company.
And i thought washing your trainers in the dish washer was mad.
