Default Temp fluctuation

Hi Guys,

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction, my 06 WRX has started to have issues with the running temp, it literally goes off the scale (hot) and after a while it drops only to spike again, originally I thought it was a leaking hose however thats def not the case I am now thinking its either water pump or thermostat? any ideas and advice would be awesome

I'm having the same issue.
I've also got a tiny spray of water coming out the top of the radiator sometimes. Likely to be radiator I guess but possibly something else at fault causing pressure build up?
As soon as I switch engine off it cools down immediately according to the temp guage.

a radiator doesn't just leak some of the time, if it's leaking it needs replacing or you will eventually run low on coolant and have it boil up, which could potentially damage the engine.

I would guess the thermostat. I wouldn't risk it being the gauge playing up.
I wouldn't drive it far until you get to the bottom of it.

It's booked in to garage tomorrow morning and I'll have my breakdown take it there because the temp guage keeps spiking.
My question was more is it the obvious, radiator, or is something else going on.

I don't think its the HG I cannot see any symptoms of it oil is good and black no milkshake radiator water is showing no signs of oil mixing with it and coolant levels are holding and not dropping

I think I will swap out the thermostat its an old car so I would assume its never been changed

Hi oil and water doesn't necessarily have to mix as a sign of hg failure there could be a small leak pressurising the system hope it's an away fix and you have a competent mechanic

Will order one today, any recommendations? Car is hopefully going on track in Sept so really want to get this fixed

Also, another thing I may not of mentioned - the fans never seem to come on, have checked the fuses and they are all ok and the fans spin easily enough

Fans should kick in at 95* make sure the 2 connecting blocks at the bottom are clicked in properly.
If thermostat doesn't sort it then I would be looking at the temp gauge sensor, there are 2 sensors, one for ECU and one for gauge so make sure you get the correct one if you go down that route.
If you have a data cable you could check to see if it is a faulty sender.

ps: fill the system the correct way to avoid airlock.

point 1. It's either hg or an airlock.

point 2. If the thermostat fails, it fails open. It does NOT cause pressure spikes. The engine just doesn't get hot.

Trust me guys.

As yours had a leak on the radiator then this shouldn't have been a surprise really.

Atleast you got decent fitters that are honest and not bum mechanics
I'd get it recovered to a reputable Subaru garage where the work will be guaranteed Pal do it right do it once or you'll fall into a deep money ditch all the best
