Depends on which oil you use (semi synth or fully synth) the sort of driving you do and the cars given service intervals/mileage.

5k/6months is about perfect for a road car with normal driving, but it does depend on what sort of driving you're doing, lot's of short journeys then you want to be changing it regularly or going for a very long drive on the motorway to burn off the excess fuel that has worked it's way into your oil, personally I would just change the oil as it works out a similar amount in fuel cost anyway.

3k changes are usually done by people that have a built engine and drive it hard mostly at weekends so tend not to do much mileage, doubt there are many people doing 2.5k changes on a standard WRX.

Don't skimp on oil either, just cough up the extra tenner for the good stuff, it's bugger all in the greater scheme of subaru ownership.

I just sold a WRX with 126k on the clock and it sounded as sweet as a nut, which I put down to 5k changes with the good stuff and not canning the crap out of it.

Speak to Alyn at ASP regarding royal purple oil. I changed to it earlier this year. We're really pleased with the results, prior to the royal purple I used to change oil at shorter intervals. But the royal purple is so clean, speak to Alyn at AS Performance

I try to do mine every 2000 miles. Thats once a year basically. Use 10-40 Castrol GTX magnetic, I've used it in all my Impreza's, and some years i do more than 2000 miles, i like the oil to always be translucent. So its working most effectively.

I change mine every six months (about 3-4k miles), normally at the start of summer and in December.
My daily commute is only 15 miles each way, so I don't get much chance to burn off any crap in the system.

Not sure on your logic there, oil needs to go dark, that shows its removing carbon deposits, i would be worried if it wasnt, plus anything under 5k and changing (unless an annual oil change) is a waste of money, especially on an expensive oil, may as well run semi synth in there....

Yep no point in paying for the really good stuff and then slinging it out after 2k, conversely the difference in price isn't exactly eye watering in the context of subaru ownership, that said in my none subaru engines I do like to change the oil quite regularly so tend to use cheaper oil and change it more often, dark treacle is enough for me, I don't do black oil. whenever I get a new to me car I do 2/3 rapid oil changes and sling in an engine flush to get it nice and clean.

Yes the oil starts to go dark by the time i change it, I know oil is mean't go dark, and i know i could run it longer. But thats just me wanting to look after my car. I know that if it was black it would be saturated with deposits. But i never would want it that colour, starting to go dark brown or its been in there a year and its out.

The Castrol GTX Magnetic is semi synthetic oil, and as i said it gets changed once a year, i wouldn't leave it in there for longer. I've just bought a few tubs of the 4 litres.

With my daily driver V5 classic, doing 12k miles a year mixed driving including quite a lot of short runs around town, I changed it every 3k miles. Mobil 10/40 semi synth.
