Car model? UK Turbo 2000? WRX? STi?

Also, 1998 covers MY98 or MY99. Do you know what it is? Post up the applied model code, and we'll let you know.

What size compressor wheel? 16g? 18g? 20g?

This is relevant, as the higher the number, the larger the wheel = more air pushed through the engine (for any given amount of time).

16g flows between c.330-350bhp

18g flows between c.350-380bhp

20g flows between c.360-400bhp

The size of turbo will dictate your minimum (best matched) injectors size, see. That said, an upgrade to 550cc yellows should cover all bases, anyway (good for c.380-420bhp).

Answer this turbo question - or at least your bhp goal - before going further.

Do they do that size, too? I have vaguely seen it in posts (I think).

Best suited to 2.5L engines though, I'll wager?!

Depends.

If its an OEM 16g (as fitted to the early MY93-96 cars) then the compressor housing has a top-entry inlet. So it won't readily mate up with your year's intake hose. You can get the cover converted to front-entry... Or get a replacement front-entry cover from Andy Forrest.

If it's an aftermarket 16g, 18g or 20g, then these are usually sold with the front-entry comp. housings, so will indeed be a direct fit.

OEM TD05H 16g top-entry inlet spout:

... And the same turbo converted to front-entry (so as to suit your MY):

Ideally i would stick to TD05 16g for a standard engine, you will need an uprated fuel pump, 440 injectors, uprated panel filter and a remap.

Get a brand new eBay 20g for about £125 delivered. Make sore you get one from a uk dealer to avoid import tax and long delivery.
Works for me on my blob WRX 12.32 second 1/4 mile at 112mph.
Happy boosting

I agree.

Esp. as it's a UK car - with effectively a WRX spec engine i.e. no forged pistions.

...Obviously, you'll also have to get ESL Live, as your most cost-effective way to map the car. Or there's Simtek or Alcatek (or possibly A'PEXi PFC!). Then there's Syvecs, too

* Actually OP, being 1998 could mean MY98 OR MY99. (MY99 allows you to get into the OEM ECU for mapping via ECUTek - without a replacement board. Plus, it'll already have the 440s. Which is nice.)

Post up your applied model code and photos of the engine bay and the front of the car...

Yep. You have a UK MY98, so grey 380cc injectors -- only flow enough for up to about 310 flywheel bhp. And that's if you're lucky! More likely to be 270-290, on average.

The applied model code's 4th "F" character for a UKDM car denotes a MY98 (but for a JDM, it is an "E" -- yes, weird, I know).

To confirm, post photos of front bumper and top of engine....

You need the MY97/98 yellow versions, from a JDM car.

The MY99/00 ones are slightly different (shorter pintle and differently positioned seals), and won't fit into the MY98's rails. Unless you buy an adapter kit.

Yes, either.

FYI, the "Version" nomenclature was marketed only for the Classic STi variants, only.

Hence the "MY--" is better, as it's a catch-all term.

That said, obviously, we still know what you mean by using "Version..."

Right - a list of all the Classic equivalents colloquialisms:

Phase 1
MY93-95 - "Version" (1)
MY96 - "Version II" (2)

Phase 1.5
MY97 - "Version III" (3)
MY98 - "Version IV" (4)

Phase 2
MY99 - "Version V" (5)
MY00 - "Version VI" (6)

Na, don't be so naive about the Chinese stuff, everything is made there these days. Garrett and holset both have factories there.
Every Chinese turbo I have ever bought has performed faultlessly.
I don't know why people still have the fear/uncertainty over them.
My car must be in the region of 380hp
