What year?

I had a long conversation with a dealer about fitting one to my 98 UK car, was told he could get me the parts, they could fit them, but he advised me not to as they gave LOADS of trouble.

oh ok , it's an 04 fsti , it's drive by wire rather than cable which makes it more difficult i expect , i could not see any kits on ebay for it due to it being wire

Yep I fitted an aftermarket kit to my 06 STI which is drive by wire. Works pretty well. Company i got it from was Conrad Anderson (search google). Install was fairly easy, throttle input connector plugs inline to the throttle cable by the pedal. Few other connections too of course but all within the cabin. I did this mod maybe 8 years ago, had no problems with it at all.

They only list kits for 06 Impreza's on.

Company I worked for used to fit aftermarket kits, I did a few myself, mostly on Mazda's, don't remember any of them coming back with problems beyond user error, they were mechanical though not DBW which I would imagine is a lot easier, they could be a bit of a pig to set up and get right, I never liked doing them as they could really screw my day if I had problems, much sooner fit alarms and stereo's and have a nice easy day.

Was over 20yrs ago now so I don't remember any of the names but I'm sure any decent car audio / alarm centre will know the best brands to go for.

Imprezas were, i think, drive by wire only after 06 (hawkeye). OP said his FSTI was drive by wire. Tbh i didn't check the website, OP can do his own research to make sure of applicbility to his vehicle.

thanks for the info on the kits , downside is more expensive than i thought , i'm tempted to try a theory of using a choke cable to throttle pedal yes a mad idea but may work , but if i'm at the same speed for hours it may do the job
