Question Rear Hub Backing Plates, interchangeable??

Are rear hub backing plates interchangeable

Q. I know the hubs and shaft knuckles are specific to either R160 or R180 diffs, but could you remove the backing plate from a classic STI and fit it to a newage STI hub?

I have a 2003 JDM STI and a big brake kit from a 1999 STI.

> The classic sti had a 171mm handbrake assembly with caliper mounting 148mm apart on an R160 rear diff.

> The JDM STI has a 191mm handbrake assembly with caliper mounting 112mm apart on an R180 rear diff.

So I need my JDM STI to have the 171mm handbrake assembly and 148mm caliper mounting.

Is this possible??

Hi
No they are different where they bolt on , that's why you either have to fit the thicker handbrake shoes or the discs with the reducing insert
Cheers Ian

356mm

But they're KSport and you might recal we had a chat about this over the phone not too long ago... I'm still struggling with it

I am trying to avoid the only option which is milling out the handbrake housing to make the discs fit.

On nicely worn down pads I can get the 171mm housing milled out to within a millimetre of its life and they'll fit, If only to allow the worn down shoes a surface to grip on to.

I think I've exhausted every other option now

So is there definitely no way to swap JUST the backing plates?

I mean use the 2003 hub and 2003 knuckle, but the 1999 backing plate to be swapped with the 2003 one?

It cant be welded in place?

Sell the brake kit and buy an appropriate one for your car.

Otherwise you'll just be in this situation again when you need new discs, or lumbering someone with the problem if you sold the car in the mean time.

Selling would be fine, only after paying £2500 for the kit and only using it for 6months originally... then thinking they'd fit so spending another £1000 getting them refurbed, I am reluctant to sell them for peanuts now.

I'd rather make them fit one way or the other. Replacement discs will be no problem for me or the next owner... not that I'm ever selling it!!

I need advise from a Scooby breaker that has both classic sti hubs and newage sti hubs sitting in front of them to tell me if the backing plates can be swapped around... through means of welding or whatever??

Backing plates, I take it you mean the stone guards?

Get rid of them.

Yeah the backing plates that do absolutely nufin, that's exactly what I'm taking about...

No not the stone guards (if you read the thread), the backing plates that hold the handbrake assembly and the caliper mounting holes

Why don't you just change the bells and brackets ?
It'll all bolt straight on then

£300 Brackets
£560 Bells
£260 Rotors

Need new rotors as the bells come up different... its one expensive mistake I made not selling them before I spunked a load more money refurbing them... all I saw was 5x100pcd and thought great I can use them, fronts went on fine, but my lack of checking the rears was my downfall.

I've decided to get the brackets and mill out the bells, they will do the job still of holding the handbrake shoes and that's all I require from them.

Later down the line I'll treat myself to new bells and rotors all round when the discs need replacing.

Advice to others... swerve KSport/D2 and others... spend the extra and buy AP brakes, then hit up Ian at Godspeed for any replacements you need.

Lesson Learnt!

Last question...

2003 WRX backing plate used in place of the 2003 STI backing plate?

I'm assuming the knuckles on the back will be the same joints and connections, so its just a case of using the 2003 STI hub in the 2003 WRX assembly? Possible?

Are hubs interchangeable like that??
