IFG - Mine happens when stationary as well. Any gear, clutch in/out, any speed etc. Its only related to engine RPM.

Edit: Frankly, I'm so used to it I don't hear it anymore...

My new Impreaz WRX STi UK is driving me nuts at 3700RPM. There's a buzzing noise coming from the from of the car when either accelerating or decelerating through 3700RPM.

After taking it into my Subaru dealer for the 1,000 mile servce a loose heat shield was the culprit, however when tightened up it made absolutely no difference. One of their engineers came out on a test run with me and claimed it was the brake lines 'zinging' and was not uncommon on Impreza's.

Has anyone else experienced this irritating noise and has it been fixed?

Thanks,

Phil

Is this the dreaded "fire siren / police siren" like noise? I would describe it as a whine, rather than a buzz.

I get mine at that RPM range as well, 3600-4000rpm. No difference with varying road speeds, clutch or gear positions. Only dependant on RPM. Also, mine only happens when the car is fully warmed up (usu after 10mins of driving). MY01 JDM STI RA, 24000+kms.

Posted here a while back and got several responses - why don't you look to see if you can find that thread. Troubleshooting, I have disconnected both aircon/alternator/power-steering belts and the noise volume or quality has not changed.

I believe that its the cambelt or just a weird engine harmonic then. Let me know if you find a fix.

My new Impreza WRX Prodrive has a similar noise but not related with RPM, it just happens when going around 220-240Km/h. It seems to come from the right side of the front.

Towser,
could well be the brake pipes 'zinging' !
i had similar on my car (my00).
Now - how to describe where to look ....(note for my00) on the
engine bulkhead (behind the speedo, but in the engine bay, if you
know what i mean ) there are four hydraulic metal pipes, on my car three were held in plastic clips - one loose, this one was vibrating on the others - just bent/moved slightly and cured !

Hope that helps (and is clear !)
cheers alan

thanks Alan, at the 1,000 mile service they tightened up a heatshield and once I'd covered 1500 miles the noise went away. I'm putting it down to the car bedding in.

Its not the Gearbox or Diff.

Noise is there when the car is stationary, with clutch in or out, with gear neutral or selected. No change in volume or quality.

Its definitely coming from something ahead of the flywheel.

I should have checked here before posting my thread. I have this exact problem, at 3000 to 4000 rpm ,when warm. I also checked all heat shields, tightened all the bolts etc. I am now under the belief that the noise is from inside the car, behind the dash itself. Somebody please tell me what it is! The car has now done over 3000 miles, STi7.
I also get the loud noise at speeds of around 100mph, thought someone was blowing their horn the first time, but is every time, and even happens when combined road and wind speed equal about 100. It must be a wind induced noise (but not a fart).

Yep got this also. Any chance it could be due to the fact that we all set our rev buzzer alarm to circa 4000 revs when running it in. Just a thought cos we seem to have thought about everything else.

While it really does sound like its coming from inside the car, I do believe that its from the engine block. Maybe a weird harmonic or something like that. I've stopped listening for it already, has been there from day 1 and will be there till the day I sell the car...

*throw hands up in air* - I give up!

Had the same problem.

A very loud noise & vibration at 3,500rpm, any gear, even whilst stationary in neutral.

I originally thought it was a heatshield or brake pipe vibrating.

However investigation by my dealer (S&S in Ayr) found a pipe under the intercooler that had come loose from it's retaining clip. All covered by warranty but they did have to remove the intercooler to find it.

Sorry, the dealer fixed it, so not exactly sure.

Mark

PS: agree that it does sound like it's coming from behind the dash.

I won't say that mine's a "vibration" as much as it is a noise. How bad was your vibration?

tks.

I had the same problem with my MY01. Came in at around 3k rpm and only in third gear when you came off the accelerator. The dealer replaced the clutch which has made a vast improvement but it still hasn't gone completely.

This definately wasn't a clutch issue.

My car is now fixed!

Mark, tks for your thoughts.

Mine doesn't sound like a noise caused by a loose pipe. Mine sounds more like a belt whine. I've also checked as best I can under the intercooler and around the general area. Can't seem to find any loose pipes etc.

Thumbs down

RT,
I've got the same problem. Sti UK, 2000 miles ,buzzing noise at 4200 rpm in any gear (but not when stationary) - seems to be coming from behind the speedo. If you find out what the problem is then please post.

Cheers, Ian

Hi Chaps

This was someone thing I asked about about 6 months ago but cannot find it in the search.
I have a RB5 MY99 which did exactly the same.
I took it to the dealer and they fixed it.
If you look at the driver side of the engine bay - at the top of the engine bay you will see about 4 very thin pipes that run along the engine bay.
These were vibrating against the bulkhead itself and causing a buzzing.
The dealer put some foam between them and the bulkhead and problem solved.

My UK STI does have the buzzing noise about 4900/5100 rpm. The noise is only present when driving and not when stationary. You can't really get the car to make the sound when holding the revs, but is very noticable when accelerating.

Yeap, that sounds like mine was.

Initially thought it was from behind the dash. Also checked all the brake pipes and exhaust heatshields.

My dealer eventually found a pipe under the intercooler that had come loose from it's retaining clip.
