Default GC8 Oil separator plate fix, remove engine or remove gearbox?

Guys, can you advise, i need to do the oil separator plate, rear crank seal etc so it means either engine out or gearbox out.

Which would be easier on a classic impreza sti ra 5spd ?

Everyone has different views but I personally would take the engine out if you have a lift possibly gearbox. The engine comes out without disconnecting shafts and gear linkages etc.

Not a big job two people is handy but a couple of hours should do it as long as all comes apart ok. Less after you've done it once.

The gearbox can be out in under half the time it takes to pull the motor!

Beg to differ far easier to pull the engine with no lift and gearbox stand. We can pull a standard classic engine in 20 mins as long as nothing is seized.

I would pull the engine, that way you can check/replace the cam cover gaskets, check the timing belt/coolant hoses etc etc

I have just done timing belt, oil pump, water pump etc but think i will still take engine out to check rocker gaskets, turbo oil return hose and anything else i cant see, will prob leave heads unless i see an issue as these can be done over the winter months. I have a rally in November so sticking to essential stuff for this then will pull engine again over the winter and do heads and clutch.

Get on with it Sir not a difficult job you only really need someone when you putting engine back in but even then not necessary
