Default 2004 Impreza GX Immobiliser weirdness

Hello...i have a 2003 Impreza blobeye...both of the key fobs both suddenly stopped working. Strangely I can still bump start the car and drive it, but cannot start it using the key in the ignition. The red key light on the dash goes off when i put the key in, but does not turn the engine over. Does this suggest that the key code is being recognised by the ignition and allowing the fuel pump to work, but the key fob is not able to turn off the ignition immobiliser? Is that how these things work? FYI i do not have the immo code, i only bought the car a couple of days ago...the old owner did not have the code for the keypad...nor did he know he could have recoded it from the keys. But now i have an Impreza with no code, and no key fobs that work...luckily i live somewhere very hilly, so it's bump starts until i can work out what to do. Any help much appreciated!!!!!
