Default Battery not charging

I removed the inlet manifold on my 02 bug after having a fuel smell, ReFitted its all good now after it was running for ten mins the alarm went off ( poss low battery?) i came to it today started it again it ran siren went off again and battery went flat.
It looks like the alternator isnt charging, i cant check voltages till tomorrow when i recharge battery at work.
The earths and positive and the green connecter were all fitted.
Coincidence the alternator has failed or have i missed something?
thanks

How long was the battery off?
What condition is the battery in?

That model has, IIRC, a so-called smart alternator, which doesn't charge unless it detects a load across it, so folk run with internal fans on, lights on, hrw on etc.

Once it's charged and you are certain it's OK and not dropped a cell, try running the car with lights on.
