Default HERE'S A WEIRD ONE FOR THE SN MASSIVE . . . ?!

Car: MY99 STi 5 (FMIC, 20g, 550s, etc...)

Went for a leisurely drive on this fine Sunday. No positive boost was used. Just trundling along, etc...

...When I noticed a orange light on the dash. It was the 'cat-on-fire' warning. It stayed on for quite a long time before going out. Then it came on very briefly a couple more times.

However, I'm fully decatted!

(I'm assuming the dormant cat-on-fire connector has been made waterproof and tied up out of the way, by the specialist when I had my mods done. Although I don't know for sure).

What's the explanation, folks?

I guess it's coincidental that today is very hot (as, in addition, I rarely drive it for sustained periods, anyway).

That still doesn't explain away the lack of a cat, of course!

The light is this...

Not this precise one, but the graphics follow exactly the same idea i.e. 3 zigzag heatwaves rising off the bulge (cat?)

I ASSUME therefore it defo is a cat-on-fire light......and not just a general EGT light? Because if the latter, then I'm 'worried'...

The sensor is still reading, otherwise you could not get a signal to the dash to illuminate the dashlight.SJ.

Wire ends when removed mustn't be insulated cause there's one sure thing if its not in the exhaust it definitely isn't hot enough outside to get illuminated.

Thanks for your collective input.

Yeah, the free end has probably been left hanging and may have melted against the exhaust or somesuch - as you mentioned.

It's the only logical explanation.

(I'm up at RCM soon... I'll get them to check it all out.)

As said, (A) I never boosted; and (B) it wasn't exactly roasting hot ambients, anyway.

Cheers guys.

Tomorrow's headline in Joz-town:

"Impreza mysteriously burns to a hulk on owner's drive overnight"
"Police suspect foul play by whoever fitted the zorst"

Ha.

Well, the mods were all fitted back in Nov 2011 IIRC. And the light has never come on till now!

Plus, of course, being decatted, the sensor's connector is not plugged into anything, anyway.

Agreed, but the sensor probably is simply a heat=sensitive resistance, that gives low resistance and lights the light when hot.
Melted connector with a short circuit will do the same.

Only way it can illuminate is if it's shorting as you don't have the sensor anymore , the connector is near front suspension turret
