Thinking about replacing the steering rack bushes on my 06 R Sport Impreza with some Superpro poly ones. Does anybody know which style are needed? Can't get under the car right now to check.

I checked on the Superpro site but it doesn't give my indication which one is right. It's either SPF1972K or SPF2648K according to them.

Ah I totally forgot about Opposed Forces, and it's right next to Scoobynet in my bookmarks! Thanks Gambit, it does look like it's the SPF1972K. They're like a third of the price of the other ones too which is nice.

 

For anybody wondering in the future, they are definitely the correct ones. Just fitted them today and they went in very easily.

 

What kind of difference are you getting?

 

Hard to say really. I replaced the engine, gearbox and pitch stop mounts with Group N ones at the same time so it's difficult to know what's doing what. The car feels so much more responsive now!

I think they're contributing to the slightly more accurate steering. It's only slight but there is a small difference in how the car turns into a corner. Before I found I would almost have to overturn very slightly if I was turning in quickly then bring the steering back a little but that's gone now. There's more feedback through the wheel from the road now too. I don't feel it was £20 wasted but then, the originals had done 85000 miles so were past their best. No idea if they'd have made any difference if you were replacing good condition bushes.

 

They work well when used with the steering knuckle from an sti. The sti uses a hard joint, most other have a bush in there which reduces vibration.
Matty at mb developments normally has some.

 

 

How does it feel now?

 

Even better. Car feels more responsive and predictable turning in now. Not to say it was bad before but there is definitely a positive difference. For less than a tank of petrol for both the knuckle and bushes I'm very happy with the change.

 

If you're looking for some value for money mods I'd suggest a rear arb from any non-widetrack sti, plus uprated drop links and bushes. Matty at mb developments normally has them in. Also a group N pitch stop mount and a tegiwa brake stopper. Should help it turn, stop and put down power for about £150. None are particularly hard to fit either.

 

I'm interested in the steering rack bushes too for my hawk sti, how difficult are they to fit? Do you have to take the rack off?

I did this on my old wrx wagon. It's not that difficult, just fiddly. You can leave the rack connected, so you won't put anything out of alignment. It can help to have a second pair of hands to manipulate the rack while you try to get the bushes in place.
