A friends, fitted with front mount, oil in the tubing, (some was around maf inside ) seaps out of silicone joints, uses engine oil , smokes out of the exhaust , hard to tell colour as tinted rear window so when driving cant tell, at idle, more cloudy smoke.

not had this issue myself so never looked into it and wondered ( without taking turbo or engine apart ) any tests to try before venturing down recon turbo etc

I'd be checking for play in the shaft for the turbo. If it was rings, how would the oil get to the intercooler pipework, through the breathers i guess. I'd be looking for a compression tester after checking the turbo.

I had knackered rings on my car this year and was only noticeable once the engine was HOT. On lift off it was spitting out smoke and BIG flames. Fun for a while but not ideal lol It only every did this after a few laps at knockhill. Never managed it on the road.

 

cheers for the info, im 90% sure its the turbo seals , as you say, only way the oil could be getting into the intercooler pipes is breathers yet it seems too much for that, about a litre or 2 has been used to top up the engine oil level in about 3 months and the seapage around the silicone joints of the intercooler piping is like pure engine oil

Turbo seals for me was,
when you come to a standstill like at traffic lights etc it would smoke when you pulled off.
so given a few seconds for the oil to build up then when pulled off it burnt it off.
when driving it wasn't noticeable.

 

Also if it was rings, your oil would smell of fuel and likely wouldn't need a top up due to borewash. This was another reason for my engine getting pulled. That and the reduced compression.

 

just remove turbo intake and control turbo inlet and shaft clearance

and control pcv system too
