There are many DTC's that will not cause any perceived difference. The front Llamba sensor/ sensor heater failure DTC's (A/F sensor ) being a few.(it does reduce the mpg tho' over time)

My bugeye had this but it was something like the cam position sensor (That could be completly wrong by the way but it was something like that). I got the car off my bro , he always knew about it but never bothered as it made no difference and went away for a while at a time. But my mechanic worried if light would come on and I'd just ignore it thinking it was the old fault when it could be something more serious.
It was an absolute **** to fix aparently. Yours could be anything mind you.

You not got a friend that has a reader or a kkl cable? Either will work to show you the codes

What's an mot failure? Low compression? They can't tell that and they don't test compression either. If your talking eml, depends on the year afair

haven't you got yourself a bluetooth or wifi OBD reader for your phone ?? ,, easy just to see what the issue is without needing to pay someone

there are a few different apps ,, they all do similar things,,, read fault codes and they also can show you loads of gauges ,,, so you can either use it like I do just as fault code tool ,,,, or you can set it up to show you your gauges on a display like a ipad or hooked up to your stereo screen

very clever bits of kit really and can save quite a few quid reading fault codes as we all know how much garages charge for this simple process
