Question 4EAT Drain and fill capacity? Hard to read the level on dipstick

Hi guys,

Once I bought my car, I drained the ATF fluid and I got ~ 2.2 liters drained, so added 2.2l back. Seemed like it was ok.
Just drained again, added 2.2l and it was hard to read the level on the dipstick, there was no border visible. I read a lot that people drain and fill 3.7 - 5 liters.
I added a bit more to 3 liters total. Still have difficulties in reading the level.

Would it be safer to top up to 4 liters total added?
How many liters you guys drain?

Thank you.

Your JDM 2005 Forester Sport Shift box (TV1B5MBWAB) is very similar to US/UK MY2007 Forester boxes (TV1B5MVAA) and (TV1B5MGWAB)

Thank you very much for the information @Don Clark but every time I tried to read the measurement, I found the fluid is spreaded out over the dipstick. Maybe its because of the not convenient dipstick location and it touches some hoses on the way out or touches the walls of the tube it is coming from. So I don't see clearly the exact fluid level. Will try again for sure.
Just to clarify, I have to check the fluid level on the idling engine (not turned off), right?
