Hi!

I would like to measure the air temperature between the intercooler and the engine. I'm planning to build a DIY water spray thingy that will spray based on temperature. But no. 1 is to measure the temperature.

Im interested in any info you have. Has anyone done a DIY temperature meter like that? Where to put the sensor and how?

Would also be nice to measure the temperature at the airfilter etc.

Jan Shim pointed me to www.jaycar.co.au - they sell a nice k-type dual thermometer affair

You can get exposed junction K-type thermocouples from electronics retailers, and then you just loosen the jubilee clip at the intercooler exit and feed the junction into the edge of the airstream. If you go too far you can stick the throttle open which is a Bad Thing.

You then need a meter to read it. RS51 from www.rswww.com is the one a few folk use - battery powered, inexpensive, internally compensated with a maximum and hold facility.

For your spray project you may want to consider some of the Autospeed articles on the same and their inexpensive controller.

I only use it on track and use the headlight washer button manually. Over 45 degrees many find you have to retard the ignition if you are on the edge. Unfortunately the STi ECU has a temperature sensor, but it is before the turbo and the map is unused, and even then it doesn't compensate the timing, only the boost sadly.

There is an IC - AD595AQ which again is inexpensive and has the compensation thermocouple and gives a linear output that can drive a voltmeter.

Some of the posher voltmeters will also take a K thermocouple.

You can do the same for EGT using a larger probe without the exposed junction.

Question

John,
what thermocouple are you using? there are just sooo many on RS !

Also, I've seen some nice one line lcd type displays in some cars at meets that look quite neat and would fit nicely under a boost gauge or something.
Anyone seen or got one. & if so, where can I get one / how much? !

cheers
Steve

K type exposed junction 1.5m cable with plug. Can't remember the order code - it has been on several earlier threads.
