Dodgy Petrol Guage Reading

A couple of days ago, I noticed that the petrol guage had dropped by about 1/4 of a tank. It was OK when I started the car up, but dropped down after about a mile. It then went back up by a 1/4 of a tank a few miles down the road.
Is this anything to worry about? Dodgy sensor?
