Exclamation

About 5 mins from home today, noticed smoke, thought it was coming from exhaust, but was not. when I stopped, lots of smoke! not good. Opened up engine bay, lots of liquid, possibly oil, pished all over left hand side (drivers side) of engine bay.

Cause would seem to be a pipe coming loose. The pipe in question is one of two that feed into a big plastic container thingy (techy description I know ). Location of said item is in between the PAS resivoir (or where you top it up) and the radiator tank thingy (where the radiator cap lid is)

Now, what is this big round thing? oil breather tank? catchment tank? I NEED to know, because I'm a little worried about using the car now. I'd like to know what the thing is and what the liquid was. I am assuming it was oil, cos it looks like it. Would therefore assume I should top up the oil and I'll be ok?

Thanks for any fast responses.

Sorry, not familiar with the early Impreza but...sounds like part of a breather system.

Check the oil level if it needs topped up, but can you not re-fit the hose?

Alan,
Have refitted the hose, so that's cool. Will check oil level tomorrow morning. hopefully not lost much, was only doing it for about 2 mins or so.

Does look like breather tank or something, could not follow the pipes to their likely end as they dissapeared under a mess of other pipes and the engine block.

Car did seem to be running fine after, so guess it's nothing too serious.

If the hose of your oil catch tank has come loose, you will get some oil in the engine bay and it will smoke because of hot exhaust piping etc, but shouldnt be a problem. Put the hose back (fasten properly but do not overtighten) and clean the engine bay.

Are you sure you have an oil catch tank? Have you (or a previous owner) fitted one or is there one as standard on your car?

I've not fitted a catch tank, the acutal tank thing is stamped subaru and thus I'm guessing it's a standard part.

Ok, who's the big pilock! me!

Found the real problem this morning! Driving along, same thing happened, turns out there is a small spilt in the large radiator hose coming out of the radiator, and this is what was spewing, something all over the engine bay. Tis now gaffer taped up, until I can get over to the garage! Doh!

Well, at least i also found that pipe that was disconnected, which prob should not have been.

thanks for help and advice chaps.

Markus,

Go for the full set of samco from R&D rally 76.40 +vat look very nice indeed, but be carefull when you fit them as the header tank is very brittle.

Rgds, Bryan

Markus,

My bottom hose is OK would do you want it? you may have to cut it to length but it's pretty much the sane shape.

I am assuming it was oil, cos it looks like it
I'd be more concerned in what the liquid is...
